    Default Help on Bloodwork

My frustration now continues. My doctor mailed me the bloodwork today and when I saw one of the notes, it made me furious. It said: The negative finding (titer of less than 10) in this immunofluorescent test for antibodies to native DNA is not consistent with systemic lupus erythematosus. However, it does not rule out this diagnosis since these antibodies occur in only about one half of the untreated cases.

If this statement is true then why does my "OLD" doctor act like I'm fine. Here are the other results and I have not a clue to know how to read them.

    Titer: Negative 1:10
    RNP Antibodies <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9)
    Smith Antibodies <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9)
    Sjogren's Anti SS A <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9)
    Sjogren's Anti SS B <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9)
    CCP Antibodies IgG/IgA 3 units (0-19)
    RA Latex Turbid 8.4 (0.0-13.9)
    Sedimentation Rate Westergren 8 mm/hr (0-20)
    Antinuclear Antibodiesm, IFA Negative
    Complement C3 118 (90-180)
    Complement C4 19 (9-36)
    Complement Total 54 (22-60)
    C Reactive Protein 1.1 (0.0-4.9)
    Creatine Kenase Total 52 (24-173)

First off let me answer about the difference between your old doctor and the new one. The new one KNOWS what he is doing! That is rare! Be happy!

It is going to be difficult to answer the questions about what each test result means because the information you have given does not appear to give what the "normal" range in. Different labs use different standards for example: C Reactive Protien: Yours was 1.1 but what is the range they are using? What do they consider normal? Is that information on the paper you gave? If so, could you edit the post and add the normals?

This is bloodwork from the old doctor and I haven't seen the new one yet but I have heard she is wonderful and really listens to her patients.

Your doctor was correct when he said that these are not consitant with Lupus but he also was right when he said only about half of untreated people have it. A lupus diagnosis is made on a cumulative level. A good doctor understands that you don't have to have all of the symptoms at one time. If you have a positive ANA today and then next time it is negative you don't ignore the one that was Positive. You start a list with the Positive first and add new ones as they come.

There is a "sticky" (meaning it is at the top of the page) in the Newly diagnosed section I believe that, that give all 11 criteria for giving a lupus diagnosis. When someone has 4 of these 11 a Lupus diagnosis needs to be looked at. Take a look at that sticky so you have the info before you go to the new doctor.

    Titer: Negative 1:10
RNP Antibodies <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9) Normal
    Smith Antibodies <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9)Normal
    Sjogren's Anti SS A <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9)Normal
    Sjogren's Anti SS B <0.2 AI (0.0-0.9)Normal
    CCP Antibodies IgG/IgA 3 units (0-19)Normal
    RA Latex Turbid 8.4 (0.0-13.9)Normal
    Sedimentation Rate Westergren 8 mm/hr (0-20)Normal
    Antinuclear Antibodiesm, IFA Negative Normal
    Complement C3 118 (90-180) Normal
    Complement C4 19 (9-36) Normal
    Complement Total 54 (22-60) Normal
    C Reactive Protein 1.1 (0.0-4.9)Normal

Thanks so much,. I have looked at the sticky and I will make note of them. I am pretty sure I have at least four since these symptoms go back for quite some time now. Even my dentist says he thinks there is an autoimmune disease going on. I'll keep you posted and thanks.
