    Default anti-depressents

    hi everyone,

i was wondering if anyone suffering with migraines has ever been put on anti-depressents for "prevention of migraines". My pcp prescribed amitricyptene (sp) for me to prevent the migraines. I did not reaize that it was a anti-depressent until i got home from the pharmacy. I took one pill the other night, and i did not like how i felt the next day. I did not take it last night.

I was once put on Cymbalta for fibromyalgia, and had horrible side effects. I took myself off (against drs. wishes), and have never had another one.

i was just wondering if any of you have had experience with these.

thanks, and love to you all.

    Hey Phyllis,

I thought I answered a post about this the other day but I may not have pressed send! LOL

Ammitriptyline is an anti depressant however it is also used for Fibro and chronic pain. Just like all meds of this kind it takes a couple of weeks to adjust to it. I am on a HUGE dose of it for fibro and chronic pain and my daughter is on a low dose for chronic pain. You take it right before bed and it really helps you sleep. It does take several weeks for you to adjust to the groggie feeling in the morning and even the next day. It really does help with joint pain and fibro pain. Give it a try for several weeks before you make a decision.

Its interesting you say that because I was just told by my doctor that she might start me on Prozac or Viagra (lol) for my Raynauds. Anti-depressants fall under the catagory of vasodilators apparently so they help open up blood vessels. I guess the same logic would apply to your migrains as is it does to my Raynauds. I would say to try it too. My mom started taking anti-depression drugs for stress and it took her a few weeks to get used to it too because it made her really tired.

    thanks mari and ritz,

i talked with my pcp today, and she said to take 1/2 tablet instead of 1 whole one. the following night after taking 1, my heart started racing, i was jittery, and was full of energy....i will keep trying until i see the neurologist in a couple of weeks. thanks again.

i am also going to inquire about botox and acupuncture.
