Cool My Big Fat Greek Vacation

    Hi Friends!
I'm back from Greece and finally recovered from jet lag. Greece was awesome! The cities and the terrain are not very handicapped-friendly, but the people there are so warm and helpful. I'm here to tell you - it's very doable with loving family members to help out, too.
I'm thinking that I will start a blog in which to put all of the details for those who want to read about it. Jeff took over 1400 pictures! I'm currently picking out and captioning my favorites, and I'll upload them here and on my FB page as soon as I can.
I had an exciting trip to the top of the acropolis in Athens! They installed a wheelchair lift for the Olympics in 2004. It takes you halfway up on a traditional lift over some stairs. Then the cute Greek guy transfers you over to a caged-in elevator that goes straight up the cliff side! I had to deal with my fear of heights. Seeing the Parthenon up close made it worth it, though.
We cruised to Santorini on a ferry, and I had to deal with heights there, too. The roads were steep and narrow and all of the walkways were narrow and cobblestone. I couldn't use my chair at all, but had to depend on my cane or lean on either Jeff, Heather or Eric. It is definitely one of the most beautiful places on earth, and the food was delicious.
We also visited Crete, and I totally blissed out when we visited the palace of Knossos. It is very well set up for visitors, with fairly easy walkways, and I had a wonderful time exploring the ancient ruins. We found that my wheelchair was a great help when we visited museums on Crete and in Athens. Because I was in it, both Jeff and I were given free admittance to the museums - yeah! I blissed out again when I came face to face with the original mask of Agamemnon and my favorite little Minoan Snake Goddess.
The plane flights were the most difficult part of the trip. Japan Airlines did a much better job of making me comfortable two years ago. Also, did you hear the news report about airplane food making people sick lately? It's true - it happened to me. All of my sun protection worked perfectly. I spent lots of time in the Greek sun and had a small burn in one place - right where my sock must have fallen down a bit and exposed a spot where I didn't apply the sunscreen.
This was a dream vacation, and it's something that I'll be talking fondly about for years to come.
    Love and Hugs,
    Marla

Wow, I'm so glad you had a good time that was also well deserved!
I haven't heard about airline food making people sick, but I am going to Quebec in about a week and a half (a client at the barn I used to work at gave me tickets as a gift for taking care of her horse, so my trip is free!), so I'll avoid anything they give me now besides water. I hope you weren't sick for long. It sounds like a very beautiful and interesting place to visit, and you're brave for flying such a long distance, and twice! I get nervous just for the 4 hour flight from BC to Quebec.

    Welcome back!

    Welcome home,

I'm anxious to read your blog, and see the pics! I'm glad everything went well, and you had a minimum of problems getting around. I've never been there, but I was aware of the steep and narrow terrain of the region. I'm glad you were able to improvise, adapt, and overcome, with the help of Jeff and your family. It sounds like you were absolutley in your element, with all the history, the museums, and of course, the food! One of these days, I really need to go there. I'm glad you are home safe, and your spinal tap went smoothly.

I'm still having problems uploading pictures. I don't know if it is still an update problem or just me. I'll get my computer expert to give it a try later this weekend.

I got word from Admin that he's working on fixing the various bugs from the last upgrade, so hopefully the uploading problems will be fixed ASAP.

Welcome Home and I am so happy to hear that you had a wonderful trip. I know what you mean about it not being friendly for those with mobility issues. My 78yr old Mother went to Greece and ran into the same issues. So, as a result, there were a lot of places that she just did not venture into. But she still had a wonderful time.

I am so happy to hear that you had a dream vacation and can't wait to see the pictures. I hope that you have a wonderful holiday weekend and continue to get some rest.

    Peace and Blessings
