Welcome to our family! I am glad that Jessie introduced you to us and that you decided to join.
How long have you been on 75mg of Prednisone? Has your doctor talked to you about weening off of it or reducing your dosage? Usually, our doctors will recommend some of the steroid sparing drugs so that we can reduce our Prednisone dosage or get to a lower maintenance dosage. If the maintenance dosage of prednisone is greater than 10 mg per day, some of the following steroid-sparing drugs can be added to your regimen: Low dosages of methotrexate (Rheumatrex), Imuran, Cytoxan, Cyclosporin, and Cellcept. Perhaps you can ask your doctor about the possible use of one of these drugs in order to reduce your Prednisone dosage.
Plaquenil and Prednisone are the two standard treatments in Lupus. Plaquenil is an anti-malarial drug that has anti-inflammatory properties. It can also be used as a steroid-sparing drug. However, plaquenil is a cumulative medication and can take weeks to months before significant results are seen. It is for this reason that it is generally given with Prednisone. Many have also found that Plaquenil helps to alleviate some of the debilitating fatigue.
You can work closely with your doctor to discuss your options for your treatment regime, it may take some time and several experimentations with different combinations of drugs. But, hopefully you will find a treatment regime that works for you. In the meantime, we are here to help you in any way that we can.
Peace and Blessings
