i'm a diabetic and occasionally have trouble getting a good 'stick' and enough blood. Make sure that your lancet is set to go in as deep as possible - most of the little 'guns' (I don't know what you call them) are adjustable; I keep mine on 4 (deepest) all the time.
If you're having trouble with your finger sticks, first try the side of the finger, not the pad. Second, try to warm up your hands -- tuck them under your arms, swing them around in a a circle, whatever -- before you stick. The warmth and movement will get blood to your extremities.
If none of this works, talk to your endocrinologist or diabetes educator -- they have all kinds of tricks and tips for this sort of thing. (I hope you are seeing an endo, and not just your family prac, esp if you have lupus too - you will benefit from the specialist's deeper knowledge).
