Default Plaquenil - can it stop working after many years??

I've been on plaquenil (400mg. a day) for 9 years now. I am wondering if maybe my body is just getting immune to it and it isn't working any more?? Is this possible?

Thanks for any shared experiences or wisdom

    Sassy

but I am sure someone who really know's will come around soon and tell u..... lol

    hey Sassy,

I have heard some say that it did nothing for them even after the 6 months to 1 year, but I haven't heard after 9 years it doesn't work. Perhaps you problems are out of it's range and doc needs to find what is wrong.

    Smile Plaquenil

I had asked my rheumatologist this very question several years ago. He had shared it can be 10 years before it wouldn't work. Like you, I am in my 9th year with Plaquenil. However, my disease has become more progressive which includes my triggers. If you are sun sensitive/UV, it is accumulative. It would be worth visiting with your physician and/or reassessing your triggers. This took me along time to realize my disease process had changed. I went as far as staying out of my triggers for a few weeks and reintroducing them. Hope this helps! Katrina11

Talk to your doctor about this issue. He may want to start you on Prednisone or another corticosteroid or even an immunosuppressant drug if Plaquenil is no longer effective. I've never heard of this, but I'm sure that it is possible as our bodies develop tolerance to anything used for an extended period of time!

I wish you the very best

    Default Before you consdier stopping

I've only been on it for 9 months... but my specialist said that she has known of cases whereby someone has come off it after 20 years of being ünder control"thinking it's not needed anymore... experienced a bad flare - and then plaquenil has made no difference when reintroduced...
