    Default Choking??

Does anyone feel like they're choking all the time?

I thought it was depression but after weeks of having trouble swallowing I'm starting to wonder. I feel like I have a lump in my throat all the time or that my throat is closing. After taking an anti-anxiety pill it doesn't get better but I did notice it was better after taking a Losec pill (indigestion pill) it was better for a few hours. Now, I'm wondering if I have CREST scleraderma in addition to Lupus. My recent flare up included extreme muscle pain (which I had never had before) and now the choking which I think could be the esophagus. Well back to my gp next week. I still don't have an appointment with a local Rheumatologist.

Update with my recent doctors appt., my doctor believed the choking was caused from taking to much pain medication (Motrin) for weeks, I've damaged my esphogus so the stomach acid backs up my esphogus and leaks into my lungs. Now I take Losec and Domperidone Maleate daily and the choking has subsided, I always avoid coffee as per doctors orders.

    Default hi

Oh Julie this sounds scary. Get to the doctors for advice soon. I have swallowing problems, but not this severe. Just try and keep calm as you possibly can whilst its happening and maybe keep water near by to help. I am sorry if this advice isnt so good, but i am sure someone will be here soon to help you with better advice. Hang in there and keep posting.

    Love and gentle hugs

    Hi Julie46

I've also had swallowing/choking problems, but mine were eventually diagnosed as a combination of things related to my esophagus. At first, my docs thought I had asthma and were treating me for that for about a year.

It was finally discovered that it was all in my upper airway. I have reflux disease and muscle spasms in my esophogus. And because of an upper GI test I had done about 20 years ago where a very large tube was put down my very small airway, I developed arthritis and inflammation in the joints of my vocal cords and they slowly closed, scarred, and fixed themselves to my airway. This resulted in a very, very narrow airway and has damaged my vocal cords. As a result, I have a very quiet voice and I cannot project it at all. It's difficult for people to hear me....especially in a very noisy environment. That can be quite frustrating at times as we live in a pretty noisy world.

I have to be followed by an ENT regularly and a vocal cord specialist.

I just wanted to share this in hopes of letting others know that you should see your doctor right away if things are going on with your esophogus or airway. That's one of those areas that you don't want to ignore if you're having symptoms. My father was having some swallowing issues and it was discovered that he had a thyroid condition called Hashimoto's disease. He sees an excellent specialist that has been able to treat him with great success.

Your swallowing issue may be nothing serious, but when your airway is involved, always get it checked out by your doctor. That's definitely an area that you don't want to mess around with.

    Fondly,

    Lori :P

    Default swallowing problems also

I am glad you brought this up. I have had some problems with swallowing and thought it was in my head. I actually keep forgetting to bring it up to my doctor but will now put it on my list of questions. I don't go back until May.
I hope it gets better for you. I don't have have the extend of the problem that you but I guess it doesn't hurt to watch it.

I too have had my times of swallowing difficulties. I have just always written it off as Lupus causing swelling in the throat. Now, I find out that my thyroid is swollen and inflamed, but not bad enough to show up as thyroid disease. Don't know if this could cause the swallowing problems, but my lower throad gets really sore and painful to the touch.

when one of gets answers from dr. the rest of us can futher explore our own symptoms....I love this group.

    Hi Lori AND everyone else!

I thought i was going crazy cuz one of my MANY symptoms is a swollen, sore and raspy throat!

My food goes down SLOWLY and it gets stuck sometimes when this symptom flares.

My husband and kids always know when my symptoms start to flare cuz my voice changes.

I have an ENT but i dont even think i told him about this cuz at the time my ears were plugged and sore with a very HIGH RINGING (still are) and i have bad vertigo so thats what were working on right now.

Gosh, i guess i should tell him huh? i didnt think it could be that serious cuz other symptoms seem so much worse to me.

    Unhappy Swallowing problems

I am glad everyone is speaking on this subject. I have swallowing troubles from time to time just as everyone else is describing. I thought it was in my head. Sometimes I also get a dry hacking cough. I do not smoke or am around anyone who smokes but I feel the cough is like a smokers cough. Dry, hacking cough with out any other symptoms. After a few days it goes away. I thought tonight that I was have swallowing problems more since I have been having the coughing problems also this week.

    Hey Julie,

Have you been scoped lately? That sounds like you need to go to a gastro doc..
I hope that your doc will be able to find what is wrong and fix it.
