Have you already spoken with a doctor? If so, what did they suggest as treatment? Generally the muscle and joint pain in Lupus is treated with non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medications (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen). These medications usually are effective for most people are usually well tolerated. However, it sounds as if they are not working to alleviate your pain. When this line of therapy is not effective, antimalarial drugs such as hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) are usually prescribed and can be prescribed along with Corticosteroids (prednisone) when the joints & muscles remain swollen and painful despite the other treatments.
If your pain is mostly in one particular spot, such as in a joint or a trigger point in a specific muscle, your doctor may suggest injecting medication right into the site of your pain. These injections are commonly referred to as cortisone shots, but what medication is injected can vary.
Joint injections are usually a combination of a local anesthetic, or numbing agent, which provides immediate relief, and a corticosteroid, such as cortisone. The steroid reduces inflammation and often can relieve your pain for several weeks or even months at a time.
With reference to non-medical ways to relieve this pain, I've heard some people talk about Arthcare as a natural way to help with the pain. This is an anti-inflammatory herbal oil which claims to help in relieving pain and in strengthening the bone tissues, and the neuromuscular systems. It also claims to be an antioxidant. You massage the oil into your skin and it penetrates the body tissue. It claims to help in removing stiffness and improving mobility of limbs, and to bring relief from rheumatic pains, joint pains etc. I've never used it myslef, so I can't give you any testimonials.
A warm bath before bed can relieve muscle tension, ease aching joints and help you get a good night's sleep. You could also try heat therapies such as heated pools, whirlpools, warm showers, warm compresses or microwaveable heat packs.
Perhaps someone else will be able to give you some good information about how to deal with your pain. I do hope that you are able to find some relief soon!
Peace and Blessings
