Default where to go for second opinion

Hi there--I don't know where to ask this, so I'll try here :
I’m trying to gather information for my sister-in-law who lives in Hawaii and is seeking a comprehensive second opinion on the “mainland” or continental US. She has SLE and is currently seeing several different specialists because of several organ systems involved.

We are looking for a major hospital system that can offer a comprehensive second opinion, where she can see several specialists in a short period of time, and the specialists can (and will) talk to each other to coordinate the best possible care for her. Currently her specialists do not communicate and each one prescribes a ton of medication without knowing or caring what the others are doing.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go? Money is not an issue. thanks

    Hi,

Is your sister on Oahu? At the University of Hawaii do they have a medical center? I don't recall because sometime ago I lived in Aiea on Oahu for a little over three years.

Seems a university, with various medical departments would coordinate with one another...and be more aggressive in treatment and administer new technology....

I know the University of Washington in Seattle has a great medical centers...Five hour flight from Honolulu. Seattle was my home, till a year ago. Great city too.

    Wasn't much to go on...sigh.

Wishing your sister well. Thank you for looking out for your sister-in-law.

Keep well to both of you,
    Oluwa

Perhaps you can contact the Lupus Research Institute and they may be able to refer her to a comprehensive Lupus treatment center in the state of her choice: hwww.lupusresearchinstitute.org

Or she can contact the Lupus Foundation of America and they may be able to do the same: www.lupus.org

There is also "Lupus LA" started by noted rheumatologist and author, Daniel J. Wallace: 800.74.LUPUS (800.745.8787)

I wish you and your sister the very best of luck!

    Peace and Blessings

Hi there again: Ok, I did an enormous amount of research last week to figure out the best place for my sister-in-law to go for a second opinion. The kind where you can fly in from far away and get the gold-medal treatment. I created a complicated spreadsheet wtih my conclusions and recommendations to her, and if anyone would like to have a copy, send me a private message with your email address and I'll forward it to you.

My conclusions were based on the following:

    I cross-referenced:

Suggestions from the CEO of the LFA, the Lupus Foundation of America and
Suggestions from the CEO’s of about 10 of the state or regional LFA satellite offices
Rankings of the US News and World Reports of US Hospitals
US Gov’t sponsored Clinical Trials: who is conducting them and who is participating in them
Private Industry Clinical Trials: see above
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Trials: see above
Doctors board-certified in rheumatology with the American College of Rheumatology
Telephone conversations with several health centers/hospitals to find out which ones are equipped to handle patients who fly in from far away for a week or two for a second opinion and the ability to see several related specialists within that short time frame. For example, Baylor told me they’re not equipped for that. University of Alabama Medical Center told me virtually the same thing although they are high ranking in the specialty—so they move to the bottom of the list
Medical Centers that have a special Lupus department or clinic
Opinions of individuals on several SLE forums on the internet

    Anyway, best of luck everyone:
