Default What causes the mouth ulcers?

Is it an infection itself? Immune response to an infection? Immune system attacking throat tissue? Something else?

Our haywire immune system....Most mouth ulcers in Lupus are a result of our abnormal immune reactions. Systemic Lupus (SLE) can and does manifest itself intraorally in the form of ulcerations, erythema (red lesions), and keratosis (thickened dermal layer, whitish in color). The vermilion border of the lip, the inner cheek, gums, and roof of the mouth are areas which are often affected.
