    Default plaquenil question

    Hey everyone,
So right now I am on plaquenil, simvastatin(for my kidneys), losartan(kidneys), gabapentin (for nerve pain) and then norco. Now my question is more directed to the plaquenil. I take 200mg twice a day and i have been on it since april 2009. For me it gave me my life back before I started taking it I could barely walk. So last match I ended up with an infection on my leg which turned out to be mrsa. i was in the hospital for 3 days to get iv antibiotics. Since then I have many for similar infections. I didn't end up back in the hospital but I had many trips to the doctor to get them drained. Oral antibiotics did the trick to clear up the infections. I usually get the infections on my legs or under my arms. I have pretty much stopped shaving because the doctor said that was a cause. But now they are about 4 inches below my armpit so shaving has nothing to do with them. I have about a total of 15 under my arms right now. I am on antibiotics but they are still pain full. They range in size from a couple centimeters to 2 inches. They are painful.

Does anyone else have problems with infections like this? My primary doctor says it from the plaquenil. But I'm afraid to stop taking it in fear the pain will come back. I just don't know. I am planning on talking to my rheumatologist once I get an appointment. I had to get a new doctor because last on was an idiot. So please let me know if you have had these issues.

    HI JCole,

I have never had the staph infections nor am I on as much medication as you, but both of my sons had a bad bout of recurrent staph a few years back. It colonized in my younger son's skin and kept recurring--- the vicious cycle of sores, antibiotics, remission, and return had him miss 45 days of school in one year. After so many rounds of Bactrim, then trying to up his Vitamins, treating the whole family, washing daily in bleach, etc, we finally saw an infectious disease specialist who put him on a combo or rifampin and doxycycline, as well as mega doses of Vitamin C and a multi-vitamin. He was on this for a month, and then the sores were finally conquered. We still follow the protocol of not reusing towels or re-wearing clothes, not overusing antibiotic ointments or soap, always washing clothes in hot water and bleach or borax. We watch cuts closely and keep very clean. MRSA is very scary. Ask your doctor to look into the combo treatment of the antibiotics. If you even google these antibiotics with staph infections, you should get a lot of hits. I wish you the best of luck!

Definitely speak with a rheumy, plaquinel is the primary drug in the fight for Lupus. If you are reacting badly, the rheumy needs to find a replacement so you don't get worse.
