What you have been told is not accurate. ANA itself is NOT a test for Lupus or any auto immune disease (there isn't a test for Lupus) so many healthy people actually have a positive ANA. positive ANAs often makes GPs send patients to specialists for a further look. There are some NEW studies that suggest that the Nuclear Dense Fine Speckled pattern MAY be a way to weed out healthy patients from people with AI disease if all other testing is normal (meaning if could be a false positive or positive for a different reason). If other testing and symptoms confirm Lupus or other AI diseases then this pattern does not rule it out. It was found to rule it out of 1/3 of patients if memory serves.
Although more studies need to be done on this it appears to be just like all other testing for Lupus and simply gives clues but no definite answer. Hope this helps
