    Default Sweet Smelling Sweat...

Recently I have noticed that my sweat smells sweet...sickly sweet. Not so much my underarm sweat because I use anti-perspirant, but my general body sweat.

I always perspire a fair bit because I have hyperhidrosis, it runs in the family. So soon after having a shower I can smell it again! My partner agrees.

I've read something about links with insulin resistance but didn't know if it was just a silly lupus thing or something I need to be more bothered about. Don't want to bother a doctor over smelling 'sweet.' Any ideas would be much appreciated!

    Hi Shine,

It could be a large variety of things however one of them could be diabetes. Those of us taking steroids are at a higher risk of getting diabetes and that is a symptom. It doesn't mean that you have it but I would definitely talk to your doctor about it

Also, consider having your thyroid levels checked. In some cases, if the levels are off, your sweat can take on a sweet smell.
This is something that you should speak to your doctor about..both of these issues (diabetes & thyroid) can be serious if not treated properly.
Please let us know what you and your doctor determine. I wish you the very best.

    Peace and Blessings

    Thanks for the replies.

I actually have Hashimoto's and I'm taking thyroxin for that but maybe I should get my levels checked and see if things are a a bit squiffy.

I'm not currently taking steroids, but if it's one of the symtoms of diabetes then it's definitely something worth mentioning, just to rule it out. Or maybe I can make some adjustments to my diet if I'm at risk.

Booked an appointment for tomorrow morning so I will let you know! Thanks again

    Shine,
I'm glad that you booked that doctor appointment. I immediately thought of diabetes, too. I've often heard that you can smell a sort of sweet smell on the breath or skin of a diabetic due to the excess of keytones that the person is producing.
Let us know what the doc says.

    Hi guys,

Had the docs appointment today. She looked very confused at first and said she couldn't think of anything that could cause sweet smelling sweat. Then she Googled it. Very professional eh! So she sent me for blood tests. Testing my glucose and my thyroid but I'm taking 150mcg thyroxin which is pretty much the standard replacement dose so thyroid should be ok. It's a fasting test so going first thing tomorrow.

She said there's also a link between auto immune conditions and a type of auto immune diabetes? But said she didnt know much about it. She also said she'll get in touch if there's anything else she thinks of in the meantime. A weird one really! But I will let you all know what happens.

Thank you for the support I often feel like a massive hyperchondriac with crap like this xx
