Unhappy update on pain in my hands

So my doctor called me and said what was causing my pain is that Im in a flare! I couldn't believe it, I usually feel really tired when im going through a flare, this time is just pain in my hands wrist and know ankles. Im on Imuran along with Plaquenil so Iasked her if this means my meds arene't working, she told me not really, it just means we want to get this under contrrol before it gets out of control. So she put me on the much dreaded rat poison I mean prednisone. Im really not happy about it, this is not good for my avascular necrosis not the mention the 25 extra lbs I have to get rid off that are not budging, but hey at least Im alive, not in a hospital, and my pain will be under control. So I guess I have no choice.

the good thing about prednisone is......
it works then you taper off of it.

    it is short term.
i have used it after all of my surgeries.

remember a flare is any time your disease is out of control.
it may be a mild flare, or a major.
if you can learn to recognise the symptoms....
and act to reduce the flare.
    it will usually pass quicker.

i am glad you have learnt something from this.
now it is time for the medicine to do its job....
and you to enjoy your new life.

    Linda,
Your doc will still prescribe predisone for you with AVN? I was told that they absolutely will never give me a steroid, since I've had the AVN dx.
I know what you mean, though. I suppose that if I was in a life or death situation, I'd say heck with the bones - I can always get replacement joints!
I hope that you can taper off quickly and that it doesn't activate the AVN.
    Hugs,
    Marla

Well I hope you get some relief from the prednisone. My husbands aunt has lupus and her main symptom is severe hand pain and swelling. I tend to get it worse in my feet. But I hope the meds work in getting it under control for you!

Marla, I was told they wouldn't prescribe it unless its absolutely necessary, Usually when I start flaring I wind up admitted into the hospital with pericardial effusion they want it to control it before it got off controll. The weird thing is this is a first that my fingers hurt the way they do, do I have to start recognizing different symptoms as the start and thats the scary part.

Yup, it seems that just when we think we've got it all figured out, another new symptom pops up.
Take care, and keep a journal - maybe you can start to see some patterns.
    Hugs,
    Marla
