    Default Lupus antibody?????

    Hi Everyone.
I am so confused. I have had a bulging disk in my neck for 6 weeks and had a bunch of tests and yesterday I was told by the internal medicine doctor that I have the lupus antibody. I have no symptoms other than neck and arm pain which is actually from the disk in my neck. He did two other blood tests yesterday and I have no idea what they were cause I was in shock and crying my eyes out because I was not prepared to hear that news. I mean I only had a sore neck????? So does this mean that I have lupus??
    Thank you.

    Hi and welcome to WHL!

First thing that you need to do is try to calm down. There is NO test for Lupus so having the Lupus antibody does not mean that you have the disease. (breathing better?) Actually, it would make many of our lives easier if there were!

To get a Lupus diagnosis a lot of things need to be going on that they can not find any other answers for. You can look here to get the criteria for diagnosing the disease. If you don't feel bad (except for the disc) then don't stress over it. Most of us complain for years of different things before we can get someone to diagnose us. One positive Lupus antibody test most likely doesn't mean anything.

please look at the criteria that tgal has mentioned.

it sounds like the doctor has told you a possible cause,...... without all of the facts.
there is no test to determine that someone has lupus.
a diagnosis is made by ruling out many, many other options first.

Steve is right, it takes alot of ruling out other options first.
I have had alot of positive readings in my blood test, he took those readings combined with all my symptoms and made the diagnosis of Lupus SLE and Rheumatoide Arthritis.
Like Tgal said, relax, take a deep breath and calm yourself down.
I hope you get the right answers soon.

I may have been dealt a bad hand, but at least I'm still playing with a full deck. ( most of the time anyway).

Thanks guys.....honestly I am making myself sick about it and overnight I feel like I have every symptom. Today I was dizzy and light headed and could not not concentrate. Honestly I feel like I'm going a bit crazy. I honestly have not gone about this the right way. Firstly an internal medicine doctor was the one who told me oh you have the lupus antibody. And he was very doctorish and now I have a million questions and feel like I'm working myself up without knowing how to deal with this. If it was in my blood could it be affecting my heart like it says in the severe cases? Would something like that happen overnight? That may sound like a silly question but I just done know. I have no rash. I do have pain in my neck but I have disks out and I have a ringing headache. Could that be from the neck pain? And now is my heart beating a mile a minute is that my mind playing tricks on me? Like I said he did 2 other blood tests but I have no idea what they were and they take 3 weeks because they have to be sent to the US. Please help me understand. Thank you.

I don't think, I can help you understand, because I am five years into my diagnosis and there are alot of things, I don't understand.
Like this flare I am in right now, it is the worsed one, I have ever had. The symptoms are plenty and different from my usual flares. It was so bad on tuesday, that my husband wanted to take me to the ER, for the first time ever.
Your fast heart beat might be from anxiety, because you are worried and without clear answers from your doctor.
I also have alot of neck pain, from RA and sometimes the neck pain turns into a headache.
Try and calm yourself down, until you can talk to your doctor.

I just wanted to let you know that I kinda went through what you are going through. I was in an accident 18 months ago and had severe pain from 3 herniated discs. Then I started having blue fingertips and toes and soles. Went to several docs and they diagnosed with raynauds. Heart specialist diagnosed ran blood and said I had lupus. Then went to rhuemi and she reran blood and it came back negative. So as of today, my rheumi thinks I have lupus but won't fully diagnose me because of the 2 negative ana's only diagnosed with raynauds and fibro. Now I am on a watch and see. She said the blood could take 5 to 7 years to show it fully. Very fustrating disease. Many symptoms...much pain and nothing to tell people I have to explain my weaknesses. Most just think I am crazy. Family seems to be less compasionate as time goes by without diagnosis. Most feel fibro is not real, it is just a catch all. I get many smirks when I say fibro so I just don't say anything and I keep my pain to myself. The worst is when you do stupid stuff all the time like forget a name or where you are. It is hard to explain that stuff. But life goes on. I try not to care what others think and I try to spend every day eating healthy and excercising to maybe just maybe make things better on my own. Good luck and hang in there. Don't freak on what any doc says because it can change ten times over. I had my heart specialist, neurologist, gp, all say lupus but rheumi says to wait and see. When my heart specialist told me lupus over the phone I was like you and was devastated and freaked out for weeks to only find out the next test came back negative and now on a wait and see. Take care.
