I need to vent (sorry so long)!!!!!

I have had it with incompentant so called doctors!!!!
I will give a quick run down of my latest gig.
I'm having fainting spells since Jan 11. 1=4 stitches to eyebrow, 1=4 stitches to chin and a chipped tooth. 2 almost faints and 1 that I was able to sitdown before I went down. All I presented to the ER was sewn up and told to follow-up with GP etc.. to see why I was fainting (meanwhile the nurses that come to my home for my adrenal failure thingy have all noted my irregular pulse low blood pressure etc...) Then there is this last time. Last Wed I'm in the tub, I feel faint go to sit, but not fast enough and well catch my arm on glass vase and that results in 60 staples and 5 stitches to my forearm. Sent home again no mention of why I'm fainting. Before I leave I plead and question the doc to make sure he got out all the glass and asked for an x-ray. No he says your fine. Away I go....
Wrong Not fine. Arm swollen to twice it's size, infection no sensation between elbow and wrist. I had x-ray today and there are 3 pieces of glass in there 1 so deeply imbeded that it is touching my humerus. So I'm to see a plastic surgeon in the next couple of days to have them removed (surgically). Oh and did I mention still no clue or really investigation as to why this is happening!!! Every doc I see seems to be passing it off onto the other, nobody is wanting to take responsibilty for me and it is pissing me off soooo much!!!

I'd be seeing red also!

They think it's perfectly normal for someone to be fainting and getting all of these lacerations? I think not.

Have you seen your primary doc for the fainting spells? What's your blood pressure when you get to ER?

Have they rules out POTS?

My pulse has been running at about 48 beats a minute and blood pressure is low for me 110/68. My heart rate is irregular too ( they all were higher befroe I had the adrenal crisis I think that started this problem) and they seen that in ER, but nothing was done. I seen my NP whom fired me(so she really is only there if I really (defined by her) need her until new GP takes over March 7) I have spoke with my rhuemy and lung doc. He set me up with a holter moniter which I took back Tuesday. Hopefully I will here soon about going to cardiologist.

What it POTS??

Our whole medical system is in the cr*pper worldwide!! Every doctor has their specialty and that is all they will deal with. If your big toe hurts you go to one doctor, if your head hurts another and on and on. No coordinating of anything and no one seems to care as long as they did their job well enough to keep them from a lawsuit. I've noticed the sicker I get the worse medical attention I get and it makes me wonder if the conspiracy theorists aren't onto something about us being dispensable because we're a drain on the system. It's terrible for you to have to go through this on top of everything else. It just doesn't make sense to me that people in the profession of healing couldn't care less! I'm so sorry this is happening to you.

Colleen,

Here is a link to a page which might help. http://www.dinet.org/index.htm I completely agree w/ Bonus Mom, have they ruled out POTS or even Neurocardiogenic Syncope? My eldest has POTS and although she rarely passes out now, before she got diagnosed she went down quite often. Just like me, it took us over a year to get her diagnosed since POTS is even less understood or heard of than Lupus. I know that it seems that most of the doctors are ignoramuses, but there are good ones out there. It was actually my daughter's gyn that said she needed to go to a cardiologist. If POTS sounds likely (I read over the symptoms and it was as if giant spotlights were going off not just lightbulbs when I looked at it for my daughter ) feel free to email me w/any questions, we've been dealing w/this for almost 5 yrs now - wow can't believe it's been that long. (((HUGS)))

I am so sorry that you are going through this! I do want to point out something that you may not have thought of. I have seizures and I was told that people with seizures and fainting issues should NEVER take a bath when alone in the house nor should they drive. As much as I fought these things it really is true. Very few seizures actually kill you but drowning in the tub or crashing a car during a seizures happens often. Same for people fainting. Until these issues are dealt with you should avoid these activities.

Sorry. I know that sucks but it will keep you and your family safe

wow! that is really horrible that this hospital and those doctors are treating you so badly. I've never taken anyone to court before but this might be what would make me. You shouldn't have to be treated like this from the ER or the other doctor. It's all just crap and irresponsible of them to pass you along like you are a hot potato. And to let you leave with glass in your wound without checking after you already told them it still feels wrong is horrendous. I'm so mad for you right now! I seem to remember your saying that there aren't so many medical treatment options where you live and that makes this hospital's behaviour more malicious to me. You, Good Dog and no one else should have to experience medical malpractice caused by a lack of care. Let me stop - this rant isn't going to help you much but to know you are not alone in your anger. It isn't misplaced. The doctors are wrong. I don't know what you can do for the immediate solution except to hire a lawyer or shout it out to the news but I think I would be taking really careful notes, especially since your home nurses are medically trained witnesses and you can prove that you are not some cracked up loony bird looking for a hospital fix.

Thanks to everyone for there posts!!! I'm going to look up POTS as soon as I get off here. I have been keeping notes (very careful notes of what has gone on over the last few weeks regarding the syncope issues) and have thought about a lawyer, but first I need to fix the outstanding problems (arm) then I can focuse my attention to making someone accountable. i should mention that my rheumy and resp docs are great (but they are located in another city that is to far away to drive to when your sick or hurt) But the rest of the docs here are quacks (for lack of a better word).
Mari we have taken steps to make sure I'm safe ie: "baby proofed (meaning removed all glass/breakables) no tubs alone, hubby and kids check on me regularly throughout the day and no more driving/work at least for now. The good thing is I can now feel them coming on the last one I had the other day I was able to lie down on the couch before it happened.
Still waiting to here from plastic doc. We dropped off x-ray to him this am so he could look at them and decide how best to get them out. Should be done tomorrow(I hope)!!!

I just looked up POTS and I found it interesting that one of the other diseases it goes along with is Addisons. I had an acute adrenal failure in Jan and I'm still recovering from it. The docs are not sure what happened to me adrenal glands. But once I'm better I know they want to test for Addisons etc... I have a lot of the smyptoms listed. I will for sure be looking into this more..

I am glad that you are taking precautions and it is good that you are getting some warning but never count on that. As with my seizures that can change so keep being careful! You are doing a great job and I agree with everyone else that you are getting faulty care right now. Stand up for yourself and don't let anyone dismiss you or your symptoms!

Officially lost my S**T!!!!!

They are not taking out the glass right now cause it will be a very long and delicate procedure due to how deep it is!!! (I think the real reason is it's the weekend) the doc said lets see what happens over the weekend (in there words hopefully it will abcess then it will be easier to find) you can have IV antibiotics if you need. I can't believe they are hoping for it to get worse. I thought the whole deal with medicine was to prevent problems!!! The doc hasn't even seen it. He just looked at the x-ray. He is getting his info from my NP (yes the one who fired me 2 weeks ago). My arm is very very sore, numb between wrist and elbow and now my fingers are tingally. So I guess I will see what happens.............
Not smiling anymore..

can you go to the ER? Perhaps they will remove it there?

Wow this is something. I hope they take the glass out soon.
But you know what worries me even more? It's your very low heartbeat, 48 is way to slow.
I had the opposite years ago, my heart would race out of the blue, as high as 160-180 and off course, I would faint. But I would never hurt myself like you did. I kind of felt it coming on and sit down.
You need to get your heart checked.

Thinking of going to ER, Not sure how much longer I can take the pain (oh the pain is unbelievable... The plastic doc said he would see me there if need be (well I guess they will decide that, cause I thought it was necessary 2 days ago). I just don't think I will be able to wait until Monday!!

Yes Debbie My heart does worry me more. At least with the arm I know it will be OK in the long run. My heart worries me because I have no idea what it could be. Unfortunantly with this arm thing it seems to have gone off the radar a bit at least on the part of my docs (not suprising). I think I should remind them when I see them next that it is the reason my arm is this way.

Well no I didn't got to ER (the problem is that "I" being the loving wife that I am told my husband it was OK he went ice fishing for 2 days this weekend, he has been super stressed about me and I think was about to snap, so I wanted to do him a favour. So I have been home with kids alone (oldest is almost 15), But I don't want to take a chance going there and they keep me and no on is here for them overnight and I don't want to ask him to come home). The arm is still the same. I'm planning to go to ER early tomorrow, that way the kids will only be on there own Sunday morning. I know it probably wasn't the best decision, but I'm still not sure there going to do to much on the weekend. I really appreciate everyone caring so much!!
I will keep u posted

Okay I went to the ER!!! To make a long story short, I'm having surgery tomorrow afternoon. I have a lot of swelling and 1 of the glass pieces has cut through my muscle and tendon. I will keep you all posted!!

After 2 1/2 hrs of surgery all the glass is out!!!!!! They found 5 pieces (not the 3 they thought were there) either they missed 2 on the x-ray or the big piece that was there broke into smaller pieces. But they did more x-rays after and there is no glass left. I'm very sore (especially my elbow weird)!!! But I'm so happy to have that done with. Now I just need to make sure the infection doesn't spread!!
Also yesterday while I was supposed to be recovering I was called to go to see a cardiologist at another hospital (1hr away) to see about the fainting spells. He thinks they may be caused my adrenal insufficiancies or maybe an arrythimia. I'm now wearing an event recorder for 30days and he has told me to be very careful with standing up etc... So things seem to be finally moving forward. I'm taking it easy for the next few days because I'm exhausted both physically and mentally. It is one thing to be sick, but to have to fight with docs and stuff makes it sooo much more difficult to cope with. I have learned alot over the last few weeks, so I'm going to call this a "learning curve in my life" and boy what a curve!!!!!!!

HOORAYYYYY!!!! I'm doing cartwheels for you which, if you could see, looks pretty darned funny b/c I do them like a little kid with the fake kick overs. I am soooo happy that you finally got that arm taken care of. I'm going to say some prayers that it heals well and fast and without complication.

Funny thing about your other part of the post is I had thought of you yesterday. I was finally catching up on an episode of Royal Pains that I missed. It was Season 2 Episode 17 Fight or Flight. The patient kept fainting for no apparent reason. They finally diagnosed her with an addrenal (either overload or insufficeincy) AI disease. I hope you get some answers with your fainting spells really soon.

Hahaha SandyR I'm laughing at the cartwheels!! The arm is healing as well as expected. The stitches come out next week. It is bandaged, but I got a look at it the other day when they changed the bandages and well..... It looks like it has been through a meat grinder!!! I have also lost all sensation from the elbow to the wrist (doc is not sure if he did that or if I caused it when I fell) and were not sure if it will come back. But me always looking for the positives, I have not been in as much pain because i can't feel it and it's not on my face!!! I'm still having the syncopes (3 in the last week) but I have not hurt myself. I'm hooked up to a 30 day event monitor which has recorded 2 of those 3 syncopes. I called the hospital and downloaded it over the phone this am, the technician said there was some abnormalities(didn't say what) and she was going to contact the doc. So will see. Also I met with my new GP on Monday (so the NP that fired me is finally gone) WOOOHOOO. This new doc seems like a take charge kinda guy (but will see when I actually really sick) and it helps that he's cute (oh don't worry that was the first thing I told my husband)!!!

Dr, House kind of cute or Dr. Doug Ross cute or Dr. Matt Hunter cute? All good kinds of cute if you ask me. LOL. I'm glad to hear that device is working and recording away. I hope this new doc does take charge and straighten things out. And if you have to just go see him several times to make sure he's still cute in the process then I say go for it!

Colleen,
LOL - love this!! I've been married for 35 years. My hubby and I both say - "I may be married, but I'm not dead yet."
I live on a military installation. I often comment to him about the handsome male specimens that jog past my window every day.
Poor guys! They are the age of my kids, and don't realize that they are being ogled by a dirty old lady!

I hope that McDreamy stays on the case and gives you some answers. I also hope that your arm gets some feeling back - that was a bad accident!
Hugs,
Marla
