There's been a lot more attention to Lupus in the Media and on Primetime so I am starting this thread so we can share what we hear in one spot. Tonight's premier episode of Private Practice had a patient with Lupus. It really hasn't explained the disease but it did bring a little attention to the link between this disease and fertility issues.

I have not heard anything on tv about lupus but i will be looking for it. I hope with some public knowledge they will get some answers we are waiting for. Thank you SandyR. Bonita

It is about time, that lupus gets some media attention.
I have told a couple of coworkers that I have lupus, neither one of them have ever heard of it and didn't know what it was.

There is a really well done commercial that runs on CNN it seems like about once an hour in the evenings. It has a lady explaining a bunch of typical symptoms, and then she says "If you have these symptoms, you might have Lupus" or something along that line. It really got my attention the first time I heard it, because I thought damn, this would be a good Lupus commercial, then they talk about Lupus. It was a pleasant surprise.

we really have nothing in australia there is only 1 support group in sydney and it is to far away for me you here nothing on any talk shows or medical shows when i mention i have lupus people have no idea what it is andhow it affects me they just think is is something i will get over it i believe they should make lupus testing normal routine for all bloodscreenings when i mentioned this to gp she said they do not do this because you have to meet so many criterias to be tested and alot of time they cannot prove it and think you are just overeacting i even met a nurse in emergency that told me she had lupus and they didnot believe and locked her up in mental hospital for a month before she got diagnoses there definetly needs to be more attention and understanding payed to this disease otherwise to many people fall through the cracks and go on suffering needlessly it is wonderful to have all of you but i would just like to be able to sit down and speak to people in my own area who understand how i feel and we could give each other and there families support. it gets lonely my family tries to understand but they just do not understand what this disease does. love talking to you all hugs kim l

I bet there's a lot more Lupies in Australia than are reported if the medical community is so dead against it. Maybe you and Linda and Monique can start and Aussie support group.

Yeah right Sandy - starting an Aussie support group - from opposite ends of the country? Ha ha ha

But Kim is right, I have never heard of Lupus before I was told I had it. Never saw anything on the TV, never read about it in the magazines, never even heard of anyone with it. Even my GP said she doesn't know very much about it. When I told my family and friends about having Lupus they said, "What's Lupus".

Perhaps there is a greater majority pf people with Skin Cancer, Diabetes and Heart disease in Australia that Lupus is only a less common disease. Who knows, even now that I know more about Lupus, I still have not heard anything about it.

Yeah right - from opposite ends of the country? Ha ha ha

So start with a phone conversation and then maybe you will be able to figure out how to meet up eventually.

Did anyone see Off the Map last night? It's a series about some doctors who run a clinic in S. America. The patient last night came in with a swollen rashy knee, shortness of breathe/pain on breathing and had a seizure and fluid around her heart. The doctor ran a SED rate and of course she has Lupus. I was so happy to see someone on tv diagnosed without the labs/malar rash. They didn't really go too far into explaining it but still, it was at least mentioned.

I haven't heard anything on TV except about the new med. But I was out talking to my new neighbor and she was telling me that they are watching her for Lupus. She said that she has many symptoms but neg. bloodwork. I told her about our site here were she could read all about everyones symptoms which might help her.

House on tv mentions lupus quite a bit... It's always the teams go to but... It never actually ends up being lupus. However, they mentioned it so many times on that show I eventually looked it up and found out what it was. And now I have it. Lol I am not a house mystery anymore... I am their lupus case haha

I haven't watched that episode yet! Loove that show! It's sitting on my dvr waiting for me to watch it. It'll be interesting to watch since it has a lupus patient on it! Even though it's interesting anyways.

I think House is the reason so many more people are aware too. I often wonder if one of their writers or consultants doesn't also have Lupus since they mention it so often. I also think House is the main reason so many other medical shows are finally recognizing it in their scripts.

I LOVE House it is my favorite show. If you want to watch the little clip from the episode where they have a case of lupus here it is lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbZ7EpmaK_o If you just search House and lupus on youtube there are so many clips lol I seriously watch this show multiple times everyday its so good. I love that people are definitely more aware of Lupus because of it.

Lol I'm going to have to watch the episode where it actually is lupus. I always found it funny they mentioned it so much but the patient never actually had it.

I was cracking up watching an episode early today because it came on right after I was reading this. The girl (Cameron) was thoroughly convinced it was lupus like the entire episode and explained what it was several times and it was really brought up every few minutes lol Obviously it wasn't lupus because on House "its never lupus" but I found it funny it was brought up SO MANY TIMES in one episode right after talking about it on here lol

There is a commercial playing in Montana, usually during the evening news. 2 variations of it, both women, one at the doctor's office, the other on the steps of a college while an off camera voice lists symptoms then zooms on the gal who looks directly at the camera with a horrified look on her face and asks "could I have Lupus?" Has been playing her for about a year now. I mentioned it to my rheumy and he hadn't seen it but was going to be on the look out for it.

I heard there was funding being put towards commercials but I havent seen any yet and no one has told me they have (which they would if they saw one lol) so I guess just certain areas are getting to see them so far? I think its great. Everytime I see a commercial dealing with RA I wonder why there arent lupus commercials too.

Lupus was mentioned on The View this morning during their "Hot Topics" section and there is a page on their website. THANK you to the View, and to Whoppi, for shedding a little light on this subject
