Just thought id update you all on the pregnancy progress. The baby is developing where she should, however there are some things they found that need to be watched closely. First off my placenta is abnormal looking. To me instead of it being smooth like half a moon shape it is kind of lumpy/bubbly looking at the bottom that lies next to the baby. The 2nd thing is that my alpha fetoprotein levels are abnormal.(Not sure if theyre high/low etc)but they decided to monitor me closely and see me back in 3 more weeks for another sonogram. They want to make sure these findings aren't causing IUGR. So far so good though because the blood flow through the placenta and the umbilical cord to the baby are normal. I am kind of bummed about hearing all this but am just taking it as it comes because I know whatever is meant to be will happen. I did have an abnormality with my placenta with my son around 20-22 weeks however and I was sent to a specialist for an ultrasound and they told me although it was thicker than normal it wasn't causing any problems. I was told when I come back in 3 weeks we will discuss a birth plan in regards to delivery if the IUGR becomes a problem etc. Do you happen to know if the AI issue can contribute to any of this? Other than that she weighs about 11ozs and developmentally is normal.

Just keep us in your prayers. Whatever is meant to be will happen.

Hi Britt,
The IUGR thing is a bit beyond anything that I would know about. The good news is that the blood flow to the baby is ok. I know that sometimes abnormalities in the uterus can work their way out as the pregnancy progresses. It sounds like you've experienced that before.
Just hang in there, and keep us informed.
Hugs,
Marla

I had written an email last night to my rheumy about all this and she said replied: "This is not a typical complication of lupus, although the literature base is quite small. It sounds as though your OB is keeping an appropriate close eye on things, and has a reasonable plan moving forward."

I would be one to have a rarity though...that's just my luck lol Guess well see. -Britt
