View Full Version : Ended Up in the ER this weekend
03-22-2010, 10:13 AM
Well as I stated in another post, I hadn't been feeling well in a few weeks. This weekend I felt like I had an infection in my pelvic area so I decided to go to the ER. Well I found out I had a very bad bladder infection and had some blood in my urine. I didn't know it was bladder related because I had no burning or pain when urinating and had not noticed the blood before. Anyway they gave me a painkiller shot and a prescription and sent me home. That was Saturday night. Today is Monday and I am just starting to feel better. Luckily I have another Drs. appt. this morning so I will find out if 3 days of Cipro will be enough to clear this infection up.
Anyway, I am glad I finally took action and found out what was wrong.

you had a tough weekend. I am glad that you went to the er and that they could help you. It is so strange when they dx us with something and we don't even have the normal symptoms....so many times i find myself shrugging my shoulders.
hope you are feeling better today.

Last August i went through this and ended up in the er for three different weekends with a lot of blood in my urine. My rhuemotologist sent me to a urilogist and i have been on a maintenance dose of antibiotic 50 mg for 6 months and it has not happened since then. Wish you luck. Bonita

I am feeling better, but it is a slow process. I got some cranberry pills at the health store. I hope they help me keep my urine PH balanced.

Had another setback. Ended up in the Urgent Care with another bladder infection. Was told if I keep getting these bladder infections, I should see a specialist. Will talk to my regular Dr. about it when I see him again. Hopefully, he will have a recommendation of a specialist in urology for me. My pelvic area and back hurts again. I am sure it will take a day or two for the Cipro to take effect, then I should feel better. I'll update you in a few days to let you all know how I am doing. Right now I have no energy, am in pain and just want to lay down, drink lots of water, and take it easy.

So sorry to hear about your set back. I get bladder infections often too and, like you, I usually don't know because I don't have any painful urination..just minor back pain!!
I've been told, by my rheumy, that Lupus patients are prone to bladder infections so we must see to it that we drink plenty of water (all of the time). She also suggested that I drink cranberry juice 2-3 times per day every day. So, I feel like I am always walking around with liquids sloshing in my belly:cute:. It has not prevented the infections entirely, but now I only get them once or twice per year!!
I hope that you feel better soon and that the meds work quickly.
Peace and Blessings

I was really miserable last night and had to take a vicodine to get any sleep since my whole pelvic area and lower back ached badly from the infection. This morning I noticed that the Cipro had started to kick in. I have zero energy though and had to drag myself out of bed to get to the pharmacy. I had other medications that I am transferring to this pharmacy so I don't have to drive all over the place to get them.

Take good care of yourself, and continue to take those cranberry pills. If I don't take one every day, I get UTIs also. All four of my daughters are also prone to them.

I'm sorry you're still suffering DOW. I was hoping by now you'd be feeling better.

I hope you feel better soon, DOW. I have a friend that gets a lot of UTIs and she says that taking a daily dose of probiotics helps her too.

Just an update. I finished my course of medicine for the UTI two days ago. My pelvic area still hurts sometimes. I have been drinking lots of cranberry juice and taking the cranberry pills. The pills seem to get my acid reflux going, but I am taking them anyway. I have to remember to drink lots of water when I take the pills. It's kind of a touch and go situation at the point. I am going to make a Drs. appt. today, and try and get in as soon as I can. He will check and see if I am over this infection then. Also, I can ask him if he will refer me to a specialist as the Urgent Care Dr. recommended. I just hope I don't have to have the urinary tract opening dilated. I had this done years and years ago and it is so painful. It helped some back then, but not a whole lot.

Are they doing cultures to make sure they are giving you the right antibiotic? I have a terrible time with bladder infections, the cranberry pills seem to help me. If they arent doing cultures, insist they do one, a simple med change may be all you need.

oh, how miserable...UTI's are the worst. I hope you are feeling better, and I will keep my fingers crossed that you don't have to get the dilation.

They keep saying the cultures are contaminated, so I know they are just guessing on what antibiotics to give me. The Dr. told me though that if I was getting relief and getting better they were working. My question is though are they giving me enough of them. They say they are giving what their Physicians Desk Reference says.
