I've got 'em....but don't know if I should be worried about this or not. Anyone else? I've got these in my fingers and feet. It would explain why a lot of drugs we've tried hasn't helped with the pain I have there...but what can be used to help with bone cyst pain... if that is the cause?

I don't know if these are bone cysts, but I have soft bumps in three of my finger joints, the three that hurt the most.

Is is possible you have rheumatoid arthritis? It has nodules that form near the joints... Could also be calcium deposits from osteoarthritis in your joints. What does your doc think? I would ask for films on those, too.

Debbie, bone cysts can do that, but mine can't be felt under the skin. These are inside rather than on the outside of the bones. What does your doc say about them?

Bunnie, my pcp and I found this in the radiologist's report that was ordered by the last rheumy I saw when I had xrays. The rheumy never mentioned it so I had no idea they found anything. The radiologist's report has one theory attached to it...the impression is listed as minimal osteoarthritic changes. It's also stated a sclerotic lesion was found on the long bone of one foot which isn't news for me...the ortho I visited a few yrs ago found that and advised me to quit my job and find another due to...he called it a precursor to a fracture (but never would acknowledge what is making all my toes hurt like mad when I use my feet for more than ten minutes.) Since then the finger pain has grown...my thumbs are super miserable. What caused the lesion on the long bone is a mystery too. The ortho said it's just stress on the bone wearing it down after years of use. I don't think that's right. I've always been a busy gal but not that busy and I'd remember any injury like that. It doesn't hurt half as bad as my toes do when I use my feet.

Since my great grandma had RA...this stuff is making me worry. Not a lot but... I had already wondered about it, considering the pain is the same on each side, characteristic of RA. I didn't know they found anything on the x rays and what bone cysts mean exactly. My pcp says it's something a rheumy needs to look into.

I can't tell if the pain is coming from the bones or the connective tissue or nerves. It's not just the joints that hurt. The rheumys I've seen about it keep calling it connective tissue is most likely the cause but that was before these xrays. I wonder if the bone cysts found are the cause and if so what's the treatment for that kind of pain? Nothing I've tried has helped with the pain in my feet or hands...not even a decadron shot helps.

Thanks for any help understanding this. I see a new rheumy in January and will bring it up then, but until that appt comes I'm trying to figure it out best I can. If the pain is due to the bone cysts, I wonder what the treatment is for that and is there any way to reverse or get rid of them?

In the summer of 2008 I was told that I had a bone marrow edema in my knee, which led to necrosis of the bone. I wonder if a bone cyst is another word for the same thing?
Ask your PCP, and if so, ask to see a good orthopedic surgeon. If they are the same thing, you might want to look up some info on avascular necrosis.
Hope this helps,
Marla

My daughter has a cyst in her hand right now...she is poss Lupus..no firm diagnosis yet..I think she takes after mom unfortunately!! She is going to an Orthopaedist in 2 weeks..I have a feeling it will have to go. It is at the base of her finger and is very painful with movement. It is most likely a Ganglion cyst..they occur frequently in hands/wrists.Did someone actually diagnose you with a "bone cyst"?

Oh Marla...that sounds awful. I hope you're healing from that.

I did see the best ortho in my area and he was the one that just kept ignoring why my feet hurt everywhere else but that one long bone. He's a waste of time. I guess that's another thing I need to ask the new rheumy I see in January...who she thinks would be helpful about it. My pcp and I are hopeful the new rheumy can help with a lot of my complaints, either with treatment or other specialists. AI disease is too complicated for many specialists in this area. There is one I'd love to see but he's not my ppo and they will not work out a payment plan.

Bless her heart! That does sound like something that will have to go. Can that be drained?

The report from radiology calls them bone cysts.

I have a theory that may be why the pain is hard to control with the treatments we've tried so far...so I'm curious if there is a treatment for that specifically that works or can they be reversed. My hands are starting to hurt like my feet have been, and it's not just in the joints.

Abba...it might be able to be drained if in fact it is a cyst but it is very dense/hard..i don't know how they will aspirate fluid from something like this? She can not get a break..she is going to my rheum in Jan..she is verrry Lupus like too...poor kid, at 23 and suffering..it kills me. P.S. I love your Snoopy!!!I am a big Charlie Brown/Snoopy fan:yes:

Hello fellow Snoopy fan! :cute:

Oh me...that doesn't sound like something that can be drained at all. I'm so sorry.

My 18 yr old daughter is having some health problems lately that have me worried also. Things that sound familiar. Nothing like your daughter is going through though.

It's just not fair.
