My Mother, who was diagnosed with SLE in 1990, has lost all of her teeth, and has dentures. I'm 41, and I don't have dentures but many of my molars have literally crumbled, and I have had implants with new artificial teeth put in permanently. It's a long, painful process (and expensive). I know it sucks, but hang in there Kathy. When it's all done, it is a huge relief, and eating will be so much easier.

Kathy,

Dont be embarrassed, just think how fab they will look n feel.My Mam lost all her teeth aged 28 due to meds and well theres another story i'll tell another time. Also when i had jaw done there was a 18 year old girl who had all hers taken out.She was so excited as she had a new set of dentures waiting for her, sparkley white.I asked how she felt she said so happy the pain has stopped and was happy to have the dentures. But i think id be nervous, its the unknown. But my friend Chris had all her top teeth pulled out and wears a denture. She tells me she can eat better, pain free and i tell you what, you can not tell at all they are dentures.
I know its a shock, but im thinking of you.Let us know how you get on.xxxxxxxx

Awww Ms. Kathy!
That does suck but having a mom that is a dental Hygienist and having been a dental asst. in my former life I know how important teeth/mouth wellness/hygiene is and how it can lead to other ailments in the body. I know it is a pain to have to first off pay for all that, adjust to the change in your mouth, not to mention the hours you will be at the dental office. Just try to take it one step at a time. Don't be embarrass...age has nothing to do with it. The meds have done this to you. Now is the time to opt and get the teeth you always wanted...Straight and white if that is the look you want. Now is the time to create a new you starting with your mouth/teeth. Think of it that way. I know it is hard and at this point you are upset about the overall outcome lupus has inflicted on your life...Re-emerge/re-birth and re-direct and do things you always wanted but couldn't because you were a nurse or smile more because you will have new teeth. Prove to Lupus that it doesn't win...You win by re-inventing you! Heck...why not with the new teeth do a great hair color and cut or weave it up or wig it up! Do a new You Kathy and boost your self esteem...turn this negative into a positive NEW FANTASTIC YOU...YOU deserve it
HUGS Kathy!

Kathy,
Like so many of us, I've also had very bad teeth. While I was teaching, I took advantage of the school district's great dental program and got most of my teeth replaced with crowns. The only "real" teeth that I have left now are the six lower teeth right in front. I like my crowns, except that the dentist made my top front teeth a bit too buck-toothed for my liking. It is a whole lot better than what I had, though.
I agree with dsunshine. Get those lovely new teeth, then go out and get a makeover. You will feel and look marvelous, darling!

You never have to apologize for venting and seeking support Kathy. Some things need to be complained about.

Ok, Kathy,

For YOU my dear, I will come OUT and tell everybody here, I HAVE UPPER DENTURES. It is 100% better, than having bad teeth, or like me constant toothache. I was in so much pain, I finally gave in and had them all pulled, all 10 of them and had dentures put in. NO MORE PAIN. I will say though, as soon as I can afford it, I will get the high bridge( I think that is what it's called), where they put anchors into the gum bone, so the dentures have a better fit and hold. Another thing, my hudband has never seen me without my teeth, when I take them out to clean, I lock the bathroom door, lol. That is not something I want him to see. And NO, I do not put them in a glass next to my bed. I take them out to brush then and put them right back in.
I think it will benefit you, to get rid of your bad teeth.

Debbie

No need for embarrassment...embarrassing is being in the dental field and I just went for my check-up and was not there in almost 3 years!!!( I work in a pedo practice) I clean around a little myself at work, but no excuse. I feel like I have been at so many MD appts that the mouth went by the wayside...I now had an inflamed spot that wouldn't go away...it made me go..I guess it was a little wake-up call. Also, I have a friend who had a total mouth reconstruction in her early 30's..it happens. The most important thing is that you stay infection free..pain free...and are able to eat and get nourishment as the end result! Any dental questions...feel free.

I will join your club. I just had my three of my front teeth replace because the nerve root spontainiously died. by the time I finish my dental work half of my teeth will be either crowned and two missing. I am 35 years old and have always taken care of my teeth. why is this happening? I dont know. as for you do you have sjogrens? I know that causes dental problems.

hi kathy, pain-free ice cream, what is that? I am thinking that dentures may be a blessing in disguise. I agree, get a new hair cut/color, get a sassy color and paint your fingernails (and toenails), and like debbie said "re-invent" yourself....what great advice. My teeth also crumble, i can't eat anything without some pain, and my dentist is talking me about doing some things, but they are all so expensive. And like pandagirl said, it is so important that we keep away any infections. So, lady, go get yourself some pearly whites, and come around and brag to us about the "new you".

Kathy,

Yes, I do sleep with them. When I had surgery in February of this year, I begged the anaesthetist, that I could keep my dentures in, he said only if they are in tightly, they were, so I did not have to take them out for the surgery.
At night I brush my teeth and leave the dentures in, in the morning I take them out to brush them inside and out, takes about two minutes and I put them back in.
Good luck and don't be embarresed.
