I have this heavyness in my chest - not really pain. Feels like a weight across my breasts. I am frequently out of breath and I have a cough. It has been more than a month. Is this plurisy? What would the treatment be? Is there anyway I can know - maybe it is alergies, right? Maybe the plaquinell will help it too?

I am on plaquinel which has done wonders for my joints - though it is very recent - six weeks I think.

If there is anyone with experience with this symptom who can relate or relieve my concerns I appreciate the reply.

Wait I should also say that I have sever GERD right now - wich is related to the sjorgens - so maybe this is related to that, and is not a lung thing?

As far as I know, plurisy is very painful. Ever since I had my bronchitis, I have coughed for over 4 weeks, I am very short of breath, even though my cough is gone. Every time I excert myself, even a little, I am short of breath. Mine feels, like somebody is hugging me to tight.

HI KAREN! WOW, youre going through what i am AT THIS EXACT TIME! I am in the process of tests for any potential heart/arteries problems. Im wearing a heart monitor and i had an ultrasound done BUT, those are drops in the bucket for what tests SHOULD be done as women with THIS particular issue. My dr is going to order MORE tests after the monitor is turned back in. I talked to the CLEVELAND CLINIC and they are wanting me to come in for THEIR tests IF my dr isnt willing to do SPECIFIC tests THEY think should be done. Look up their website, they are VERY INFORMATIVE and are the BEST in the COUNTRY! THe thing is , with our diseases (i have Sjogrens as well) symptoms can overlap and / or be something completely different than what the dr might THINK it is. GOOD LUCK!

Hi karenboss,
I have dealt with pleurisy myself. I have had it twice in my life. once at 16 and again 2yrs ago. The last time I had it I got it from pneumonia. I woke up one night with excruciating pain in my chest. I couldn't breathe, it felt like I had a heard of elephants of my chest. and feels like someone repeatedly beating me with a baseball bat. My hubby took me to the er and they did x rays and ct scans and said I had a bad case of pleurisy. He put me on a nebulizer wich helped some, but still had to sleep sitting up for months. I had the pain and difficulty breathing for 21 months before I saw any relief. IT SUCKED!!! I hope you do not have pleurisy because it is VERY PAINFUL! It could be as simple as asthma! tightness and heavyness in the chest could be asthma.

I hope this helps you somewhat!
Take care gentle hugs

Hi you guys - thanks for your input - it is very helpful. I don't think it is plurasy for me because it isn't painful. Just a weight on my chest. Honestly I'm thinking it is gastorintestinal related to sjogren's - you know just bad indigestion - which is stupid because I've all but stopped eating. I've lost 10 lbs in the last month. I don't know. That does't explain the cough and short breath. I'm just so sick of going to Dr all the time.

I guess it could be asthma - but have never had that before.

thank you all

hugs and out

hi karen, Plurisy is extremely painful....like smokerscat said, feels like someone is beating on your chest and ribs with a baseball bat. It is actually inflamation causing the lungs to rub against the bones.....i think you would know if you had this. I know you are tired of going to drs.,,,,maybe just keep a detailed journal for a time. So many times we wait to see what happens with symptoms, then we go to the dr., and they usually tell us it is the lupus.....just makes me get mad all over again. Hope you start to feel better by in the morning.

Sorry about the pressure and tightness in your chest, Karen. I have terrible GERD that I assume is from Sjogren's also. I do have gastroparesis-GP- as well (not sure what came first, but I'm assuming that the AI issues came before gastroparesis and GERD although they were not dx'ed until after the GP and GERD).

I was dx with asthma in March-had no idea why I was suddenly out of breath walking four blocks and just chalked it up to weight gain. My family doctor examined me and asked how long I'd been wheezing. I had had a bit of dull pain in my chest/breastbone so she ordered a chest xray, which was clear, and gave me an inhaler. I now take Singulair nightly. I only have issues in colder weather. Knowing how cold it gets in Boise (my parents live in Emmett), it could be asthma. Only your doctor can tell you.

Anyway, I haven't ever had the pressure that you've described with GERD. I have had inflammation between my ribs and just this weekend, above the right breast and wrapping around to the shoulder blade. I think that is simply inflammation that is common in SLE (which Rob suggested and my rheumy confirmed the last time I experienced it). It only lasted four days and Dr Rob and my rheumy both suggested naprosyn.

Get it checked out, just to be sure.

If it makes any difference, I'm 44, have never smoked and have never had any type of breathing issues-no history of pneumonia, bronchitis or the like. I was surprised by the asthma dx, but believe it's due to the dryness of Sjogren's but I've been wrong before :)

I had pleurisy a few years ago and believe me you will know it if you have it! It is very painful due to the fact that your lungs are swollen. I wanted to suggest that you get tested for asthma. I had a lot of lung problems when I was first diagnosed and was in the hospital at least three times year with bronchitis. They eventually sent me home with a breathing treatment machine due to all of the problems. Eventually I found a great family doctor and he ran some tests and it turned out I had asthma!!!!!! He said it is just another issue that is caused by my Lupus. The positive is that it is very treatable and it really does get better!!!!!!! It never hurts to bring it up!!!!! Keep us posted and tonight I am sending you healing thoughts and gentle hugs to get you through all of this

Good luck with your heart monitor. I hope you do not have heart or arterial disease - make sure your doctor refers you to a vascular physician for specific vascular review. I recently had cardiac bypass due to subclavian thrombosis and it was difficult to diagnosis and catch. Stay on top of that!!!

OMG, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH for THAT advise! Seriously! My dr isnt ACTUALLY HEARING i dont think. I am so GLAD you mentioned the SPECIALIST i NEED to be going to on top of the TESTS I BELIEVE SHOULD BE DONE. I JUST KNOW theres MORE to LOOK at than what the monitor says.
