View Full Version : Fingernails and headache

I've had a horrible headache for the past two days. Nothing will get rid of it, not even my fast acting migraine meds. Literally, my head is pounding. Is this something that is common for Lupus?
Also, my nails have become really, really brittle lately. Up until a couple weeks ago, I had long nails, always have. Now they are all splitting and breaking off. They are now very short. When I push on them they feel soft. It's strange because I used to have really strong nails.
Anyone experience this? If so, what can I do? I put Eucerin on my hands about 4 times a day because they are so dry. I'm not sure if that's helping or hurting the fingernail situation.
Thanks for your help!

hi shepard girl,

i know migraines run with lupus, and i know once i had one so bad that lasted for so long, i ended up in ER getting an IV for relief. I have had them so bad that my meds would not work, and it is such a difficult symptom to deal with.

the fingernail issues could be due to some of the meds, but not sure. I have gone through periods of time where my nails were very weak and brittle, and then it seems to pass. Do you take calcium tablets each day, my dr. has me on 2 tablets (with vit. d) each day. I think this might help with nails.

sorry your head is hurting so bad, hope you find some way to get relief from the pain.

I am not on calcium. Is that something that I should be taking? Do you think it would be OK to take regardless of my diagnosis? Seriously, I'm willing to try anything.

I have had bad headaches for a while now, the doctor says its from the prednisone, but seriously, i have had them for a few years and ive only been on pred for 2 months, so im pretty sure the pred makes no difference, its just something i have...
The fingernails...interestingly enough, since i was diagnosed my nails have gotten so much stronger and they actually look good for the first time in my life! So i cant help you there sorry!!
I hope the headache goes away soon for you, i know how horrible migraines and headaches are...i actually have called in sick to work today because i had a migraine last night/this morning...

Many of us suffer from Lupus Headaches that are very similar to migraines. However, they do not often respond to migraine medication:nah:. Often, treating the underlying disorder (the Lupus) helps the headaches. I suffer from them also and my doctor has tried several treatments to help with them. Most have not worked that well for me. But taking the migraine meds along with complete darkness, complete quiet, and lots of water has helped.
I hope that you find some relief from your headaches and that you find the root cause!

Peace and Blessings

Thanks for replying. Still have a headache.
I see my pcp tomorrow morning for my thyroid check. Maybe she can help me out with understanding all this or maybe just get the headache to go away. Really, either/ or for me right now will do.

I was so surprised, because those are the same symptoms I've been having since last year. The nails being brittle I noticed it got worse last week, when I woke up the next morning after a severe migraine attack and saw that the top was bright white and worse than they were before.

I've always have strong nails too, so I was asking myself the same question, if it's related to Lupus or not. The breaking off nails started about 2 weeks ago and now I have very short nails too.

I will be reading the responses.

Hugs,

Margie

I can't help with the headaches.

everything comes out in your nails and hair and when your in a flare it affects them. also any meds your taking affect them also. thats why they are brittle and splitting.

hope your headaches go away soon.

Hi shepherdgirl. How are you today? Did the pcp have any answers about your head pain? ((((Hugs))))

The pcp didn't have any answers for my headache. She said that I may just have to wait it out. That's after we had a pretty intense conversation about rheumatologists, though.
I found out more info on the last rheumy I went to. He was the one that gave me Xanax and Zoloft. Ends up, the nurse I had today used to go to him as her regular dr. He tried to give her the exact same drugs! She kept telling him something was wrong with her, he never listened, just kept giving her prescriptions for antidepressants.
Then, she went to a new Rheumy. It ends up that he was the first one that I went to. He ran all sorts of tests on her and diagnosed her with Lupus.
I talked to my doctor about what I'd been through with the Lupus diagnosis and then the second opinion saying possibly not. She said that I should keep a detailed list of all of my symptoms and get the testing in a couple weeks. If the dsDNA comes back positive again and the ANA is still positive with a negative titer, I can look for another rheumy. If things are different, we'll go from there.
It took nearly thirty minutes for us to get to that conclusion. During this time, she noticed my toes were blue. I was wearing flip flops and was apparently cold. When I picked up my foot to show her how the spots on my feet were getting better, she noticed that my toes (from the bottom) were blue. We're not talking kind of blue, they were really blue-like blueberries! I've never seen them like that before, but then again, I never look at the bottom of my feet.
That prompted more conversation on whether I do or don't have Lupus and what symptoms warrant more investigation and possibly changing rheumatologists. Apparently blue toes are a cause for concern.
So, all of that said, I still have a headache, but at least I'm not stressing out about it anymore. The pcp seems to think it could be signaling a flare coming on (if I do have Lupus). We shall soon see, I guess. I'm prepared, now at least.
Thanks for reading, I know it was a novel, sorry!

glad you had such an intensive conversation with your dr., but i wish she could have helped you with your headache. she is right, it could be a signal for an oncoming flare, glad you are prepared.

lupus headaches...which are very similar to migraines definetely run with lupus. because i get them, and i've never had any headache like this before...until i got lupus.
they are TERRIBLE...light hurts your head...any noise goes right thru you. i actually get nauseous from the pain of the headache! i had one the other day and i was sittin in my livingroom with all the lights off...the blinds pulled down and sunglasses on, because the little bit of light coming from the other room was hurting my head.

i usually just take one of my 350mg naproxens...take a nap and its gone.

i actually think that migraine meds don't respond to this kind of headache, because its not really a migraine...but it definetly feels like one!!
i've found that regular asprin doesn't work either! i guess not strong enough!

Yeah, i too get the blue toes and fingers as well. Carl thought i had dirty feet one day cuz my feet were so blue! I have a scar on my finger and it turns REAL blue when my fingers are discolored and when it subsides it turns red! Im very patriotic at least!!! LOL
