Hello all. :cute:

Having been recently diagnosed with SLE after YEARS of problems and symptoms, I'm jumping into maintaining myself like crazy. I've quit smoking, don't drink anymore (which I rarely did to start with), am working on lowering my stress...all that good stuff.

My Aunt also has SLE, and she claims that vitamins and supplements (in addition to her meds) do more for her than just the meds alone. She is taking:

Magnesium
Fish Oil
B-Complex
Calcium
Glucosamine
Chondroitin
Potassium
Zinc

I went out and bought all of the above and started taking them (along with a daily multivitamin) as soon as I was diagnosed. I've actually noticed some improvement in the last few weeks...don't know if it's wishful thinking, power of the mind, or some of the other lifestyle changes I've made. Either way, it's a good feeling.

Does anyone else use supplements to help control their Lupus? What are your stories? My rheumatologist said that he was all for anything I could find to help me along (I'm just on Clinoril at the moment...am trying to hold off on the big drugs as long as I can)...and he's all for this route of treatment. I'd love some input from y'all!!

Thanks,
Carrie

hi carrie,

my rheumy encourages adding viatmins to the daily list of meds.

I take:

folic acid - for hair (and something else, but can't remember right now)
vitamin B injection (1 mm each week)
calcium with vit. d
omega 3 - prescription strength - not fish oil
aspirin

i take these along with plaquenil, methotrexate, and various heart meds. for heart issues unrelated to lupus.

I take similar vitamins as of recent and also eat pineapple everyday..it is an anti inflammatory naturally. I too, either had relief by coincidence ,or it actually helped?? I have tremendous drug sensitivities so I am sooo limited..I am in the early diagnosis stage so I am not on heavy duty meds..nor plan to be. I will do steroids if I need to. I have had them before for allergic reactions and such.

In addition to the plaquenil, I am on
2 fish oil horse pills and
1 calcium/vitamin D horse pill
I guess they help, they certainly aren't hurting anything.
I try not to over do vitamins because there is such thing as too much of a good thing.
