Hi everyone :!: I have something new going on and I was just wondering if anyone else has had it, what it is and how to treat it. Over the last week I will wake up crying because my right arm hurts sooooooo , from my shoulder all the way to my fingertips:( It is a horrible pain that leads to my arm being very week until halfway through the day. Along with this both my hands are numb; however, I can still feel pain in my right hand, I just can not feel it when Tim will touch it or when I touch something :!: This can last for hours and then they continue to go numb through out the day. I have no idea what is going on and I have to admit,I am a bit concerned. Any ideas or suggestions :?: I am going to see the good ole doc Thursday

Hi,

Yes me too. I did see my Doctor today and told him but he didnt seem interested.....long story. But i'll pop back here to see if ISDM got an answer off her Doc. I know its an awful feeling, ive had it for a while now. I hope someone comes along and lets you and all of us know what it is. Im sure you'll have an answer before you see you doc this week...or i hope so anyway.

I hope someone can help us too. The pain is awful and not being able to feel your hands is so uncomfortable. Does it ever stop :?:

I was having similiar symptoms, not as much pain up my arms but pain and numbness in both hands. My doc said it was likely carpal tunel that developed from the arthitis since my RA had been acting up pretty bad. He suggested wrist splints that you can buy over the counter at any pharmacy and to use them at night while sleeping. He also perscribed a dietary supplement called Folgard (or something that sounds like that) which is basically a bunch of B vitamins. (I can look at the bottle later when i go home if anyone is really interested.) I have to say it took a few weeks but my hands aare feeling the best they have in months. Hope this helps.

Danica01...
Is your pinky finger numb? If so, then it isn't carpal tunnel. Carpal tunnel can result from Lupus, inflammation in the wrist joint, RA. It pinches the median nerve which does not go to that finger.

If it is in the pinky, numbness it could be a nerve coming off you cervical spine. Pinky C7-C8 disk. Could be pinched, inflamed anywhere along a nerve..in the shoulder, in the bicep or even at the disk.

I had surgery on my right hand to release the median nerve... gosh, 10 years ago and was advised to have it done on my left. Which I didn't. The left still gives me problems now and then but I adjust my movements.

CTS..It is usually aggravated by repetitive hand movements....typing is a common aggravation, playing an instrument, edema during pregnancy, disease inflammation, smaller than average wrists...and etc...

CTS is worse at night...Before I opted for surgery I would sleep with my hands above my head or over my chest. It proved such relief. By day splints, you can sleep with them...and too try to modify your hand movement for the day, the thing that you might think is inflaming it more.

While I slept it felt like my fingers would burst like a hotdog in the microwave..I would have to get up move it about, ice pack it, run it under cold water to get any type of relief...

Another way to see if it is CTS tap on the inside of your wrist..does it zap?

Or like praying except put the tops of your hands together point fingers downward and hold for a few minutes..do they go numb?

I also had cervical spine surgery at C5- C6..the pain radiated from my neck, into my shoulder blade, bicep down to my fingers. I felt like my head was Jack-in-the-Box after it opened.

Try sleeping with smaller pillows, no pillows and see if that helps...

Oluwa, Angel Oliver, iseedeadmonkeys & KimKimma,

The doctor told me it was probably CTS just like you mentioned. She did tap on the inside of my wrist and I felt nothing. tingling. She also had me push the backs of my hands together, fingers pointed down for thirty seconds, nothing happened. My hands go numb in all the fingers andthrough my entire hand.......is it CTS????? I am not sure what those two little tests were supposed to do and if she figured that it was CTS due to the fact that nothing happened......just wondering Oluwa, I am sure you can clue me in more to all of that!!!! Just let me know what you guys think. Thanks for all you posts and support

Danica01..

Hummm. Something should have happened. Wrist tapped should have created a zap...and the hands folded inward should have created a numbness to diagose CTS...from my understanding and it happened when I was being evaluated.

I waited too long, but not so long to cause permanent damage, but at the point I opted for surgery my hands never woke up and they swelled literally to the size of sausages...

Ask for EMG...Nerve Conduction test to be conducted.

Enjoy this day.

That is a great idea......you are right nothing happened and the numbness is not isolated to just my little finger, it was in all of them......mmmmmmm, I wonder if it might not be a bad idea to go see a neurologist or nerve specialist just to make sure everything is ok. I would hate to say ok and walk away thinking that it is CTS and actually have something else going on. I am going to sit on this tonight and figure it out

Danica01..

I would, they may suggest a MRI, CT-SCAN too.....

It may be just an inflamed nerve in the bicep, shoulder area causing the pain to radiate to the hand and all that would be required is a corticosteroid shot in the proper place.

I also I had a corticosteroid shot in my bicep, performed by my PCP...relieved all my pain in my blade, bicep and forearm last year. So, that might be an option too....

Or even physical therapy might be beneficial for you. I tried that but for me, it provided no relief.

Seek out all avenuesw for a diagnose and treatment....

Enjoy the afternoon...tata.

Awww Danica01 ,

I am so sorry that you are having so much pain...I agree.. you might need to see a neurologist and/or a nerve specialist to see what is going on.

I think you guys are right :!:

Did you ever see a neurologist? As I am sitting here to write this, my arm and my fingers hurt so bad, I want to cry, my fingers are also numb, or better they feel like pins and needles, it is a nauseating pain. It is mostly in my right hand, my hand and my fingers are swollen like sausages, they feel like they are going to explode. " Pain, pain go away." I don't know how I am going to sleep tonight, I am in a bad flare.

debbie,

so sorry to hear about your pain. Have you found anything that will give you some relief? My arms and hands always hurt, and sometimes it is so bad that i just can't handle the pain. I have found that if i sleep with a really soft pillow under my arms, i can get some relief. When this does not work, a good ole pain pill usually helps me get some rest.

hope you can find some comfort tonight.

Thank you Phyllis,

Last night I only got 2.5 hours of sleep, even with pain pills and Ambien. I had to get up at 4:00 AM this morning, to go to work. Unfortunatly I have a very physical job, with heavy lifting and running around. I don't know how long I can do this job anymore, but I am in somewhat of a pickle, I do need the good insurance that comes with the job, plus I am 53 years old, not so easy finding a new job. I will try a soft pillow under my arm tonight. But right now I am in a full flare, almost all of my joints hurt, last night I have cried for the first time since my diagnosis two years ago, I am in so much pain. If my writing is a little scrambled, it's because I am very foggy today.

sorry to hear you are having a ruff time with your limbs...that always sucks. I just wanted to wish you well and remission above it all and I hope you know it is on the way as long as you claim it.
Get well soon and please keep us posted as to what your doctor says it is!
