I have been reading and I know some experience stomach issues and heartburn etc... I am on Nexium but it doesn't help I am always burping---eww gross (my poor husband has to kiss that mouth :lol: ).

The newest thing this week is my aversion to coffee. NOW I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT COFFEE :!: :!: (You think-lol) Since Sunday every time I drink coffee (I take it strong with usually 1-2 shots of espresso--been doing this for years) I get an upset stomach lower left abdomen--sometimes I vomit. Is this maybe just a bug or can this be a new symptom and I will have to give up my DRUG? :cry: IF SO I NEED ANOTHER FORUM--COFFEE DRINKERS ANONYMOUS :lol: Again if I bring this up to my doctor he'll just send me to another specialist GI, so I sometimes just need a yes or no opinion not a medical one---I PROMISE I WON'T SUE :) I think it could be what I do to give myself energy--I do use supplements that my trainer recommended--I am on one called "Diamond Phire" right now have been using it for 2 weeks---not bad and it did help with the energy issues the first 2 days now its like they are sugar pills, but I still use it for workouts as a metabolism booster and fat burner.

So I really hope it's just a winter bug and that I don't develop other aversions.

In a regular cup of coffee there are about 170 mg of caffeine and in decaffeinated coffee there are about 30/40 mg of caffeine. Here are the top 12 ways that coffee (caffeine) can affect your health:

1) Cardiovascular Problems

Caffeine increases your heart rate, elevates your blood pressure, and can contribute to the development of heart disease. Both decaf and regular coffee increase your cholesterol and homocysteine, the biochemical that science has linked to increased risk for heart attack. Caffeine is also linked to coronary vasospasms, the cause for 20% of all fatal heart attacks which kill otherwise perfectly healthy people.

Caffeine stimulates the excretion of stress hormones which can produce increased levels of anxiety, irritability, muscular tension and pain, indigestion, insomnia, and decreased immunity. Increased levels of stress from caffeine can keep you from being able to make healthy responses to the normal daily stress everyone is subjected to in their lives.

2) Emotional Disturbances

Anxiety and irritability are hallmark mood disturbances associated with caffeine consumption, but equally important is depression and attention disorders. Depression may occur as part of the let down after the stimulant effects of caffeine wears off. It may also appear during the recovery period after quitting caffeine while the brain's chemistry is readjusted. Caffeine rather than increasing mental activity actually decreases blood flow to the brain by as much as 30% and negatively effects memory and mental performance.

3) Blood Sugar Swings

Diabetics and hypoglycemics should avoid caffeine because it stimulates a temporary surge in blood sugar which is then followed by an overproduction of insulin that causes a blood sugar crash within hours. If you're trying to loose weight, this rollercoaster will actually cause weight gain since insulin's message to the body is to store excess sugar as fat.

4) Gastrointestinal Problems

Many people experience a burning sensation in their stomach after drinking coffee because coffee increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid leading to an increased risk for ulcers. Coffee, including decaf, reduces the pressure on the valve between the esophagus and the stomach so that the highly acidic contents of the stomach pass up to the esophagus leading to heartburn and gastro-esophageal reflux disease. Caffeine forces the liver to release glycogen into the blood stream. Within the span of an hour or two, the result is a sharp blood sugar drop resulting in a state of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). That's when you think it's time for another cup of coffee and the whole cycle starts up again.

So, you will have to make a decision as to your continued consumption of caffeine and/or if it is causing you harm. It might be a good idea to allow your doctor to run some tests to see what, if any, harm may have already been done and what treatments might be needed!

I am a confermed coffeeholic.

I cope by drinking dark roasted coffee, (it's actually lower in cafine that regular roasted) it has a stronger taiste.

I have one cup when I get up in the morning and that's it. I used to drink coffee all day every day.

So I'm pretty happy with myself for the one cup.

I don't drink coffee anymore. Gave it up over a year ago. Thought giving it up would lower my blood pressure, but it hasn't.
Think I will start drinking it again! I don't know what to do about coffee? Confused and tired of giving up foods and beverages!

In spite of all of the above warnings...I do have one cup of decaffeinated coffee every morning :? Can't give that up!

Well I'm weaning off so I have started on black tea (may have same amount of caffeine but it doesn't kill my stomach) and one regular brewed coffee a day.
