After much research, I worry about taking these meds. My cousin had a friend that lost his battle because of the meds. Have any of you cosidered this option. I spoke with my rheumy, and she said I have that option, but that there are lots of optional meds, and that we should go through the trial process first.

Unfortunately, we feel that some organs are involved...particularly my kidneys. I see a specialist next week. Does organ involvement make a difference in the need for steroids and immunesuppressants?

Again, Thanks for being here.
Phyllis

Hi Phyllis,
I hear where you are comming from. I am on an immunosuppressent drug (Imuran). I have been on Plaquenil and Imuran for about 15 years now and they have helped me a lot. If you are having kidney involvement they will probably put you on Cell Cept. Sometimes it is necessary to take Immunosuppressents and if that is the case the doctor will closely monitor you. If you need to then I think that you should seriously consider it. I hope that this helps.

Hugs,
Kathy

Thanks Kathy,
I told my dr about my cousin's friend, and she said that it was a shame that this happened. She said this is not the norm today, because of close monitoring and many optional meds.

Words from forum members is reassuring,

thanks for the hug,
Phyllis

Hi Phyllis,
It is a shame what happened to your friend and it is not the norm. I also have to wonder if your friend being a male had anything to do with it. Lupus seems to be more severe in males that get it for some reason. Please if your doctor wants to put you on these meds, do take them as they will monitor you closely. Without medication the Lupus could worsen and damage your organs big time.

Hugs,
Kathy
