Hi everyone,

I was having a conversation today with someone and they told me that Lupus was a idiopathic disease and Multiple Sclerosis is not.

I am more then confused, truth be told and I am hopeful someone can enlighten me here.

What exactly did this person mean by idiopathic and since Lupus and MS are so similar why is one idiopathic and the other not???

Something is just not making sense to me yet I did not want to ask this person questions and seem dumb.

Thank you for helping to enlighten me here.

Idiopathic is an adjective used primarily in medicine meaning arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause.

According to that then both diseases are idiopathic. Both can come on suddenly and neither has a true known origin other than genetic predisposition to developing it. It is known that genes alone do not cause either condition so I'd say your friend is misinformed.
