Thank you so much for that information and for the "heads-up" warning about the two drugs.

For those who do not or cannot purchase the book, here is some information about both drugs:

Tramadol (aka: Ultram, Ultram ER):
Tramadol is a narcotic pain reliever. It is used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain when treatment is needed around the clock. Seizures have occurred in some people taking tramadol. Patients are more likely to have a seizure while taking tramadol, especially if they have a history of seizures or head injury, a metabolic disorder, or if they are taking certain medicines such as antidepressants (like Amitriptyline), muscle relaxers, or medicine for nausea and vomiting. Persons using Tramdol should avoid using drugs that make you sleepy (such as cold medicine, other pain medications, muscle relaxants, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety). These drugs may slow your breathing or increase drowsiness when used together with tramadol and may increase your risk of seizures.
Tramadol can cause side effects that may impair your thinking or reactions. Patients are advised to seek emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Stop using tramadol and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: seizure (convulsions); a red, blistering, peeling skin rash; or shallow breathing, weak pulse.
You may be more likely to have a seizure (convulsions) if you take tramadol while you are using certain other medicines. Do not take tramadol without telling your doctor if you also use any of the following:
* an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam);
* an antidepressant such as AMITRIPTYLINE (Elavil), citalopram (Celexa), clomipramine (Anafranil), desipramine (Norpramin), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), imipramine (Tofranil), nortriptyline (Pamelor); paroxetine (Paxil), or sertraline (Zoloft).

Amitriptyline (aka: Elavil)l is an antidepressant medication that is used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. With Lupus, it is used for the pain and sleep disorders that can accompany the Fibromyalgia symptoms. The drugs most commonly used are anti-depressants. In low doses these drugs do not act as an anti-depressant but have beneficial effects on sleep patterns and can help reduce pain. The most frequently used drug is amitriptyline although there are many different ones available. It is also used for nerve pain.
Amitriptyline is a type of medicine called a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA). This type of medicine acts on nerve cells in the brain. Serotonin and noradrenaline are neurotransmitters, When serotonin and noradrenaline are released from nerve cells in the brain they act to lighten mood. When they are reabsorbed into the nerve cells, they no longer have an effect on mood. Amitriptyline works by preventing serotonin and noradrenaline from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. This helps prolong the mood lightening effect of any released noradrenaline and serotonin. In this way, amitriptyline helps relieve depression.

At Christmas whilst in hospital with my jaw and much infected mouth and lymph nodes, i was put on Tramadol for pain and told to take 8 paracetamol when needed as well. Plus Amitryptaline to help with bringing the imflamation down in my jaw (i had lock jaw 3 times) and Pregabalin.Plus Temazepam to aid sleep and imflamation in the jaw. I was so drugged up and yet still in so much pain. In the end i had to stop all 3 as i had a severe bladder infection and stopped weeing. I was like a zombie. I kept telling the Doctor and in the end i took my own advice and stopped them. I had such a massive migrane nearly every day for weeks.Went blind in one eye tempararily and now suffer with numbness on my left side.Doctor isnt interested.
I know, taken on their own i bet they work fantantic. But with a cocktail i was on plus all my asthma meds....bad combination.
I found this info you put very interesting. Thanks allot.
The funny thing is my jaw is still NOT sorted due to UK medical practice not really caring about patients and their pain. I go to the hospital again on Wednesday.Finding the courage to stand up for myself and make them LISTEN!! So much pain for so long is warying me out.A yawn hurts and i have to hold it in case it locks. But funny how i can still eat chocolate :)

hi angel,

what are you scheduled to do at the hospital wednesday? You don't need to find the courage to stand up for yourself.....you have already found it, so don't forget that.

I supposed to get the results of the MRI scan :) erm...i wonder if they have the recoding of me running out very quickly!!!!!

I rang to cancel tomorrows appointment as i freaked in the machine, so they have not got what they need. The secretary spoke to me like i was stupid. She said....still come to the appointment.I told her what had happened and if i could speak to the specialist.Oh we carnt do that, you could be anyone on the phone:wacko:.Yet id given her all private info for her to get to my notes.Another waste of time tomorrow will be.

SO.....as ive been in so much pain, jaw, teeth, lymph nodes etc....i may do a sit in. So watch the news i may be on it....imagine...the headlines....
WHL member straps herself to dental chair and refuses to leave :).
How can i make them listen. My last visit, one month ago i told her, i dont think i can go through this pain for another 2 more weeks, maybe i'll have to have all my teeth pulled out! She laughed and said, no it'll be all sorted by then. One month on....no further on. I left the hospital i think 6th January, missing Christmas and new year, having one tooth pulled, 2 medicated and route canals, not because theyre bad.But because my jaw has moved since the lock jaw and im breaking teeth....such a great hobby:no:. How much longer can they leave me going through this? I have to hold in yawns....ooops doing one now.
Anyone know a big strapping bodyguard available for tomorrow afternoon? I feel sick just thinking about what i will be put through. Really though, im seriously thinking of once im in the room....REFUSING to leave! Maybe then they'll listen.See how i feel tomorrow.I 'll say i lost touch with reality when the police are called.Oh i hope they dont call them.I have to do something though.Or can you imagine....it'll be Christmas and still in so much pain.I carnt stand the thought anymore. Send me good vibes......and a body guard!!!!!!!!
