View Full Version : Anyone tried Cymbalta?

I've heard a lot of good things about it...and it's on it's way to being approved for fibromyalgia. I do suffer from low grade depression and fibromyalgia and my docs think it's a good idea...
but there is nothing like hearing from people who have personal experience taking it. So if anyone has and doesn't mind sharing...
I know from the studies done that it's most effective for about 6 weeks then levels out a bit and begins to decline in efficacy (for pain, not depression) after about 12 weeks.

I have not tried it, but my neurologist is considering it for the pain caused by the neuropathy in my leg. Interesting to know that the efficacy declines in such a short time. I'll have to remember to ask her about that. I'll post anything I learn about it, and if I'm using it I'll let you know how it works.

I'm so surprised no one has tried it.
I'm starting it today...my doctor is v. excitd about it and seems to think that the effects can be longer lasting.
I do want to say those studies were based on people w/ fibromyalgia and not neuropathy...it is approved on label for neuropathy but not fibro and so the drop in efficacy probably doesn't apply for you.

I just started taking Cymbalta 60 mg. My pain management specialist gave me enough samples to last for this month to see if it would help w/ my occipital and peripheral neurapathy. My doc said that your supposed to start at 20 mg. and work your way up to 40 mg. and then finally to the 60 mg. , but she only had the 60 mg. samples so that's what I had to start with. I've taken two doses so far. I've had two full nights of sleep!!!! That hasn't happened in at least eight months for me! I can definatly tell a positive difference already, although I also know that this dosage is way too strong for me. I'm going to see on monday if I can take it down to 40 mg. and just pay for the RX (I'm a self-pay pt. ,so that gets expensive very quickly) but it's worth paying the money to have the right meds. I just feel as if I'm floating, or dreaming. I do notice alot less pain already too. I think this may be my new best friend. So if your doc is trying to put you on it, I would say start out at the lowest dose and see how you feel.

I took the 60 mg. cymbalta for a total of three days and I couldn't take it anymore! I think that it was just way too strong for me. I'm only 115 lbs. and you're supposed to start out at 20 mg. and work your way up but the only samples my doc. had was 60 mg. so i gave it a shot, bad idea! The first day i thought it was going to be my miracle drug, but after the 2nd dose I felt like i was floating and dreaming while awake, and the third dose had me in bed for the following three days! So I would recommend starting out slow because it is definitly very strong! good luck to anyone else that is going to try it, let me know what you think.

If you using this newer med for sleep ...why not just try good old fashion evil, ampitriptylin??? Sure its anti dressant med, but it worked for me when i had whiplash in my neck..i needed to rest those muscles but couldnt sleep..Heck put me on 12.5mg.. and i was out like a light! Good thing it will work first time but you dont have to use it all the time.. not the side effects of many of today sleeping medications. Yes you may need 25, 50 mg for you but if you look at all the side effects of Cu,balta, heck with lupus we have enough problems!..Just a thought for you. fran

I hated the Cymbalta, every time I increased the dose I was either so exhausted or agitated and so "drunk" I couldn't do anything. I suppose it helped the pain a bit but I stopped sleeping and pooping...not so fun, oh and I sweat profusely all the time on it, not great. My Husband has done really well on it for depression though but he takes 40mg where my doc put me on 60mg. Also if your thinking about trying it check out the withdrawl symptoms listed online. I took it for 2 months and the withdrawls, even tapering down were awful.
Worst med I've taken so far
