View Full Version : The Prayer of St. Francis

Although I am not Catholic, I love this prayer because it speaks to me of what our lives should be like as people - beyond Christian or Jew, Muslim or Hindu - sharing the common bond of humanity. So it is my prayer for all of you this year.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
when there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is dispair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand,
to be loved as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

I am Catholic, and have loved this for a long time, but each time I hear or read it, it is like the first time.
My church singers sing an Acapella version of this...brings happy tears to my eyes each time...
But then Y'all KNOW I am a "mush," huh? :wink:

Thanks Marycain
That is probably the most beautiful prayer going. I love the serenity prayer as well. But this one is really what its all about. I am going to try to put it into action more in 2007 rather than the inward focus I have had for awhile. thanks again.
