Because of changes to federal procedural rules that took effect on Friday, most US companies are going to be making changes in the way electronic documents and messages such as e-mail and IM are kept. Under these new rules, if a company is sued in federal court, they may be required to produce all electronic company records as well as paper ones - including inter-office e-mails, IMs, etc., so companies will have to develop methods to review, store. and organize all these electronic records. This means most companies will be retaining records longer and looking harder at employee's e-mails and IMs, even personal ones. So if you use e-mail or IM at work, be aware these e-mails are your employer's property, not yours, even if you delete them they still exist on your hard drive or network, and if your employer ever gets sued, some corporate lawyer will be looking at everyone's e-mails. So don't put anything in your e-mails, even personal ones, that you wouldn't want your employer to read! :)
