View Full Version : A fellow Lupus survivor needs your prayers...

My grandma, Elizabeth Shaver, who is 83 years old was found in her yard with cuts, bruises and a broken neck. She also has Lupus, and as far as I know, she is on her way right now to a bigger hospital to have surgery on her neck. I don't know many details and am trying to find a way to make it there. She lives in Arkansas, and I live in Texas.
She is the most important person in the world to me. She's my shining star. I don't want her to suffer, as I'm sure she already has. But also in a selfish way, I want her to hold on till I get there. It's just a difficult situation and I am asking for your prayers. I hope to leave tonight, and hope that I don't have to go up there and make funeral arrangements. God be with us all.
Laura Shaver

Holding you and your grandmother in my prayers today

Well, I just talked to my dad who lives with her. She is at home resting.
I called the closest hospital and was relieved to hear that she was released to home.
I promptly called and my dad said that she goes to Hot Springs on Monday to consult a specialist about her neck and possibly have surgery. But the doctors did warn that her health and her age are against her. She is almost 83. She has Lupus, Osteoporosis, among many other things. I am just worried how she will heal with her bones being so brittle.
Here's the story,
My dad had just been home from the hospital for 2 hours. He had full knee replacement surgery. He went out on the front porch to smoke. My grandma went out to talk to him. She leaned forward, and just lost her balance and did a face plant. He can't walk without a walker or crutches, so he couldn't run over there and catch her. He immediately called for help.
He says that she keeps complaining about wearing the neck brace. But I am going up there this weekend to help them both out. I can't get up there before then. I've exhausted all avenues trying to figure out a way. Thanks for your prayers everyone.
Please keep my family in your thoughts, and pray for my travels as well. It's a 4 hour drive one way. Thanks. Love you all!!

It sounds like your 83 year old grandma Elizabeth is quite a survivor, off the porch, to the hospital and already wanting to take that neck brace off. Wow, talk about putting one foot in front of the other. And, just imagine you come from such "good stock".

To you and your grandma I send prayers and best wishes and to your dad who is recuperating from knee surgery. Your grandma reminds me of mine and both would probably say something like this "fiddle faddle there isn't anything wrong with me" !!!!!!!

Have a good day Laura and stay healthy.

I will continue to pray for your grandmother's health Laura

Thanks everyone. I passed on your good wishes to her a little bit ago. I will be leaving right after work tomorrow to drive up there and visit her.

Laura
Please keep us advised as to how your grandmother is recuperating and how she comes through the surgery. Also, on your father's recuperation and I will keep them both in my prayers that mother and son are able to heal quickly and that you can find strength and peace, no matter what!!

Peace and Blessings

I will write up and let you guys know something Sunday night. Unfortunately, I can't stay through Monday. I got her some of the balls that cats play with, that have bells in them. So she can jingle them if she needs anything. hehee

Well, My grandma had surgery on Tuesday. I talked to her for a while earlier on my break. She is doing better, just in a lot of pain. She is still in the hospital and said that they want to put her into a rehab center for a few days after she gets released from there. Then she will be released home. She is feeling good spiritually though. She's motivated to get better. One of the nurses is taking great care of her, and is taking her breaks to read the bible to my grandma and talk to her. I love how some people are sooo nice. Thanks for all of your prayers everyone, they've definitely helped!! :)

Hi Laura,

I was so relieved to read your post this morning, and am very glad that your grandma came through surgery and is doing so well. Isn't it the greatest blessing and relief to know that she is being cared for by such great nurses?

I will continue to keep you and your family in my prayers. How are you holding up? It can be so stressful when you are worried about someone who is so important in your life. I hope you can rest and relax a little, and also that you will have chance to see her.

Take care of yourself.

Much love,

Thanks! I am just extremely tired. I have had so much stress between that and also leaving my boyfriend and moving back in with my mom. I've had alot going on this week, but hopefully things are starting to look up. I just wish I wasn't so tired. I am finally working full time again, so I can't take a nap whenever I want. :?

Hi Laura,

Just checking in to see how you're doing? How's your grandma doing?
I know what you mean about the naps - they are so important, especially when we're feeling so tired. No doubt, all the life stresses that you've been through lately has contributed to your fatigue.

Hang in there, and stay connected with your "support" family here. I know you'll get through this - just make sure that you take good care of yourself. You'll continue to be in my prayers.

Take care, friend.

Much love,

Speaking of naps! I am exhausted. I've had those sleepless nights where you just can't get comfortable and sleep for more than 10 minutes, for about 2 weeks now. I am running on empty.

My grandma made it through surgery alright. She's just in alot of pain. She got transferred to a rehab center on Tuesday evening. She will be in there for 2-3 weeks. I hope to talk to her tonight, so I can give an update. At least she is only 10 miles away from home now, so that should make her feel better.
