Has anyone been treated with normal Quinine? I have been taking Plaquenil since being diagnose a year ago. I was feeling better but I still experienced pain, fatigue and depression especially when trying to do all the things that I used to be able to. Sometimes I would drink Tonic Water and within about an hour I would feel better. ( My daughter had Ross River Virus and found that this helped her flare ups. - I wish I had known about that when I had Ross River ) Anyway, this Christmas I did a little experiment where I just took the Plaquenil for a couple of weeks with no extra Tonic Water. I did not fare well. Then I took only 1 or 2 large glasses of Tonic Water daily and no Plaquenil for a couple of weeks. I have been doing better on the Tonic Water. However I know that that is a very inconscistent and would be better taking proper measured tablets. Has anyone tried normal Quinine?

I am glad that the Tonic Water makes you feel better. Unfortunately for many of us, Plaquenil (or other synthetic quinine) is what we need and our symptoms worsen or old ones come back when we do not take it as prescribed. So, we cannot replace it with Tonic Water. I hope that it continues to work for you. If it doesn't, you might want to ask your doctor about another medication that can help with those symptoms that Plaquenil alone does not seem to help. Many of us have taken small doses of Prednisone with our Plaquenil and the combination works well for us.
I wish you the very best!

Peace and Blessings

Hi there, just wanted to say that the tonic water experiment was just that, an experiment. It was the only way I could see if there was a better option out there for me. The good thing is that my doctor did prescribe Quinine and I have been feeling better for it. My health is too important to play games with, especially with a condition such as this where there are no known causes or cures. There are possible side affects with it but then again there are possible side affects with plaquenil and any other medication and from the list I read, I was suffering from most of them before I was diagnosed. As much as I dislike having to take any medication I will continue because I have to. Its far from perfect but the alternative is worse.

........... As much as I dislike having to take any medication I will continue because I have to. Its far from perfect but the alternative is worse.

i think most of us agree .....
no body likes to have to poison our bodies (take the medicine)
but the alternatives are much much worse.

it is important that we , as a group understand that the medicine is for our benefits, .......
not just for the drug company profits.

each one of us is far to important to mess with a regime that will relieve some of our symptoms.
you are worth protecting !!!!!!
