View Full Version : Positive for Kidney Infection... early sign of Nephritis?

A week ago I did a urinalysis at my doctor's office (not rheumy, pain management) and I tested positive for a kidney infection. I have had issues with my kidneys for a long time. Just pain around them and burning when I urinate. I've been drinking more water since I got the results back. I drink water daily, but have increased it. I don't usually drink a lot of carbonated or caffeinated drinks besides my morning cup of coffee. This kidney infection is different though. Yesterday, despite drinking two 24oz bottles of water, I didn't have to pee until at least 4 hours later. My urine looks very cloudy and I'm feeling awful in general. My legs always swell and my face is getting swollen too. In general I'm tired, achy, and I'm nervous about nephritis. Has anyone had lupus nephritis? What were some early symptoms .... besides the symptoms that you don't see on WebMD or sites like that?

Hi! I have had glomerulo nephritis for 20 years. I have stage 3 kidney disease. I think I have more info on my biography on here, but yes, when I was hospitalized it was because of the swelling. It was so bad I was 20-30 lbs full of fluid. Started in my legs and gradually when I would wake up my eyes would be swollen too. Got so bad my organs were swollen and I eventually couldn't breathe!!! Fun stuff. Not sure, but I don't think I've met anyone else on here with kidney involvement.... Think most are non organ involvement..... Please correct me if I'm wrong!!!! Would love to meet more kidney sufferers!!! ...and cns people!!!!

I finally went to the ER two days ago because I was really weak, swollen, and couldn't even sit up by myself. I was peeing a lot, but it hurt so badly and there was def blood and some cloudy looking stuff in my urine. My husband dragged me there basically because I was just ready to give up and sleep in my bed forever! They treated me with IV fluids and antibiotics. I am extremely swollen in my legs and my eyes get very swollen. My face looks full and puffy. Pants are too tight and it's NOT from eating a lot because my appetite is nonexistent. I'm never hungry. I'm 30 years old, and I'm in the age range that I know is common with lupus nephritis. I'm wondering if this is the beginning stages of nephritis. The ER, they aren't really prepared for something like that. I mean, bless their hearts they just don't know what the heck they are dealing with when it comes to Lupus and the things you should check. What kind of specialist should I see to be tested for kidney involvement?
Sidenote: Don't you love it when you go see a doctor and the RN or PA is entering your information into their computer and when you tell them that you have Lupus... THEY ask YOU what it is? I'm completely dumbfounded when this happens!

you will need to see a surgeon for the biopsy. but i would start with a rhuematologist.
the rhuemy will start with a lot of tests, as they always do.
but the thing to remember with tests is that they are trying to rule out possibilities.
lots of tests is a good sign, i had about 15 vials of blood drawn when i was being diagnosed.
also the fact that you have all over body swelling could mean a few things.
one of the more common ..... is that your body is holding fluid.
it could also be inflammation.
once again, the rhuemy will help diagnose this for you.
please keep us updated on what you find out.

I am followed by a nephrologist and have only seen rheumys a couple of times. Nephros are the kidney people. All those things are what happened to me. I got lucky in emerg when there was an intern who specialized in nephrology was there. He suspected kidney problems and ran the tests for it confirming the results. They didn't know it was lupus though, but I got passed on to the big nephro team who had me diagnosed within days. I was huge with fluid!!!!!!
