i'm going to Vegas for my bf's 30th birthday next weekend w/ a bunch of his guy frenz! Bad idea??

i'm kinda scared... Its totally hot there...what can i wear? i lost my hat :(

What if i flare up? What if i get this extremely bad headache and i have no tylenol? What if i wake up and i cant even get up or my hands hurt like hell? For sure they'll want to go to a club - but i'm tired by 12am. My mom says "U have to live ur life..." i dunno - very indecisive :? HELP

Make sure you have tylenol with you... If you don't feel like staying out at the club go back to the hotel... If you have a bad day, take it easy...

But, you know what? If you didn't have Lupus, what if you got a headache and didn't have tylenol? What if you got tired when they wanted to go to a club? What if you twisted your ankle and didn't feel like walking the strip? What if you caught a cold from the air conditioning? What if you lost all your money the first day? What if you didn't drink enough water and passed out from heat exhaustion?

You wouldn't even think about that stuff if you didn't have Lupus, would you? But it could happen then too!

OR

What if you have a GREAT TIME despite the fact that you have Lupus?

You won't know unless you try...

I think solesinger is right. Go and have fun at the level your body allows you each day. There is so much to do there that you should be able to find something at your level of energy. Have a great time.

LOOK at what You're doing ....you're putting yourself INTO A STESSED OUT situation and you have not even left.

What if none of that happens and you have a great time?????

SO make a list of what you need SO the SUN does not wipe you out and pack correctly and ther's always tylenol available every where and IF it gets that bad they DO have hospitals in VEGAS !!!!!

But if you go into this with a BAD HEAD from the start then you'll be sick before you leave......DO NOT DO THAT TO YOURSELF !!!!!

LUPUS flaris up for a reason and 99% of that time that reason is something WE DID to help it flair up......so just pay attention and DO NOT ALLOW it to get th BEST of you.....it seems it already has your mind STOP IT NOW and YOU BE IN CONTROL and you'll have a GREAT TIME !@!!!!

Have you explained your Lupus to your girlfriend? If not, perhaps you should let them know that you may get a bit more tired than they and it may happen quicker and more frequently than it does for them. You might be surprised at how supportive and understanding they will be.
If you choose not to tell them about your lupus, then I suggest that you make sure that you pack the right kinds of clothing and your medications. Also, DO NOT FORGET THE SUNSCREEN and put it on each and every day (even on parts of your body that will not be exposed). In fact, I usually suggest that we use sunscreen as body lotion - rub it everywhere! Also, do purchase another hat before you go to vegas and wear it each time that you are outside in the hot sun and make sure that you wear sunglasses with uv protection. Carry water with you ALL OF THE TIME
My son lives in Vegas and has stated that the temperature has been between 110 and 114 each day. Bear in mind, the hotels and casinos are icy cold and it is deathly hot when you walk outside. The extreme temperature changes can make a healthy person sick. Take something to keep your arms covered when indoors, but that is lightweight enough to protect you from uv rays when outdoors. Your clothing should be lightweight, loose and able to protect you from the sun.
Also, it is very hot even at night in vegas. It may cool down to 98 or 100 - but that is still hot. So, always take water with you at night also when you are walking the strip or going to clubs. When you get tired, there are so many cool places in every hotel with all types of entertainment (like malls with thunderstorms, talking statues, etc.)where you can just sit and rest while your friends continue to do what they want to do. So, neither you nor they will ever be bored.
So, like Solesinger and St. James said, put your mind at ease. Take the necessary precautions and go to vegas with the mindset that you are going to have a good time...then you WILL have a good time!
Best Of Luck
Have Tons of Fun

I just picked up my sunglasses today! 8) whoo hoo!
And about the sunscreen... even if i do wear short sleeve stuff over there... does the sunscreen actually protect me from the sun? THATS what i'm scared about... i have SPF 50... but should i get 60??

Capris would work.. I wear jeans all year long, so I'm not really a lot of help... If you're worried that you clotyhes aren't covering you enough, bring a small umbrella... I have a really pretty chinese parisol I got at the Ren Fest last year!!

:)

How was the dr. appt?

Hi Rach -
Definitely GO to Vegas! You wil have a blast. Here is one thing - the Strip is really not designed for going outside anyway. There are many many of the casinos that are connected to each other with moving walkways or trains or bridges that you can go miles without ever getting in the sun.

Maybe you know this from being there before. But maybe look on line for a map of the connectors so you can be familiar, so if you guys are out walking you can say hey, we can get from Excaliber to luxor without going outside...

Also, I'd get a hat - whatever your style is - visor, ball cap big straw hat - the sun in Vegas this time of year is brutal for everybody, not just lupies!

Have a GREAT time!

My husband and I have gone to Vegas the last couple years (except for this year). I'm recovering from hip surgery and 2 staph infections.

My aunt lives in Vegas and she gave us some great tips when going. During the day when the sun is at it's worst, use that time for looking at sights inside the casinos. At Harrah's, there's a new Toby Keith restaurant and on the top floor, there's an awesome classic car exhibit! We also used taxis wherever we went as I had alot of problems walking due to my hip problem. They have the trolleys but they're really crowded There's also the new Tram that was built a couple years ago.

Don't have a strict agenda in case you do have a flare and have problems. I had so much fun, I did have a flare but hardly noticed it with all the fun stuff to do. I also limited my walking as much as possible to help ease the joint pain.

I know you'll have a great time....don't worry about your Lupus....it's time to take a vacation from that as well!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, go and have fun. Sunblocks are good, and reapply. (sounds like you're not into sunbathing, which I wouldn't do, but just walking around from place to place) - And they make a lot of cute physician endorsed sunhats. Actually, Vegas is a place where you usually spend a lot of time indoors cuz it's HOT! Shows, casinos, buffets, more casinos inside of all the wild hotels...

And another tip... I posted elsewhere but try Rit Sunguard... it's a powder you put in the wash, and it changes cotton clothes from SPF 5 to SPF 30.. .supposed to last 20 washes. I just found it yesterday at a Rite Aid in L.A., if you have time try washing that into the clothes you're going to bring.

Have a great time and let us know how it went when you come back!

I went to Mexico in February. One day we went shopping, then planned to meet friend at a restaurant. I totally hit a wall, and my husband said "ok - I can tell you're done, let's not push it too far." He was totally right, and I would have pushed and felt who knows how bad in the am. So, we went to the restaurant and left a message for the friends that we wouldn't make it and took a taxi back to the hotel and got room service. I went to bed early, and felt much better the next day. Did I have to spend some time resting and being in my hotel room while on vacation due to lupus? Yes. Did I still have a fabulous time? Definitely.

Hope you do, too.

Live your life, Have fun, and don't worry so much, Worring about what might happen can and will only bring on your next flare faster, Relax you might have a good time, Vegas is great, and as for the heat, I went there last week, to visit my grandparents, and I am not sure whether it was the altitude, heat or general atmosphere, but I felt better than I had in a long time. So relax and have fun, You deserve it!!!!!!!!!

u have to live your life but i recommend being around people that know and understand your condition that way if something happens they'll be patient and know what to do.

please make sure you always have your meds and if you still don't feel comfortable, get a medic alert bracelet

Or, instead of the medic alert bracelet, I made index cards that I carry with me everywhere... name, phone number, address, presciptions, diagnoses, allergies, and emergency contacts.
