Hi All,

I have been unable to check in as i have been in Hospital. I adopted a 3 year old cat and within 24 hours i sustained a nasty cat bite. It wasn't the poor cats fault she got a fright and i happened to be the nearest thing. I just wanted to let you all know that i had no idea just how serious a cat bite can be. I must admit i thought i will wash it, put on a band aid and all will be well. How wrong i was...
My finger swelled pretty quickly but within a few hours the pain, swelling and redness was travelling into my hand and i was developing a fever. I presented to the ED that night and when i told them my medical Hx i.e Lupus and on MTX they were very concerned just how quickly the infection was taking hold. Anyway i was admitted had to have surgery to flush out my hand, had 12 doses of IV antibiotics and a week later i was allowed to come home. I have had to have 2 weeks off work and stay on antibiotics for like forever LOL.
I'm just glad i went to ED when i did or things might have been a lot worse.
I still can't believe all this from a cat bite, i had a tetanus shot and am relieved we don't have Rabies here because apparently that can be an issue with cats as well. Of course being immuno suppressed has had an impact on how quickly i went down... sometimes i forget how just two tablets a week can affect things.

Has anyone else had this sort of thing?

Hope everyone is ok.

Oh yea cat scratches and bites are the worst. I went to a very country school and still live here so everyone I know deals with animals and one boy was out for 2 months from cat scratch fever. Even if it might not seem serious to a healthy person us lupus people have to take extra precautions. I always call my primary if I get bit or scratched badly from a animal I rescued and he is more than willing to give them to me. With my permanent pets I always neosporn scratches and little bites because it happens. A couple a years ago I was updated on my tetanus because one of my dogs was walking back with me from the mailbox and there was a kitten she went after. So I reached down and snatched this little thing from her because she would've killed it. So I have this hissing scratching kitten and biting dog and I just run this little thing into my bathroom and my mom's laughing because all she could was hear me and apparently it was funny. It wasn't funny anymore after she saw my stomach, arm and hands, next day I just went to the doctor and even if it hurt I couldn't help but laugh because it was a funny story and only I would end up with a story like that. Though even after a day my hand was already infected that was kind of the point of my long story and the kitten was fine just shook up and I found him a great little home. Oddly enough even if it isn't only bites and scratched we should be weary, my foot got infected from what started as an hangnail then turned into a ingrown nail and it the infection ended up going up my foot and a huge open sore on my toe. oh that was gross and incredibly painful.

Glad your doing better and I know exactly how quickly something like that can sneak up on you.

My daughter was scratched by our cat one time (while playing), my daughter was 14. We have forgotten all about the scratch and about two weeks later she developed a fever and headache, it didn't go away. Two days later I took her to the doctor, right away he was thinking it was mono, but then my daughter remembered the scratch and told the doc about it. A light bulb went off in his head and he said THIS IS CAT SCRATCH FEVER. Wow, I had never heard of it before.
She had to take antibiotics for three weeks and was fine.
A cat scratch or bite, can be pretty nasty. That is why pregnant women or lupies are not supposed to clean the litter box.

My cat did me in a number of times, but never went as far as a serious infection. Guess I was lucky

I too have been attacked by a cat. It was kinda my own fault though. He was shedding horribly and I was tired of brushing him all the time. So I tried vaccuuming him. NOT one of my better ideas. NEVER VACUUM A CAT! He sliced me from my neck to past my belly button. Fortunately I didn't get sick from it or infected but I swear I'll never try that again.

Thanks all,
i must admit i had a giggle at some of those... I am an all round animal lover, i have 4 dogs, birds, and now of course the cat.
She is all black with green eyes, i was hoping she may bring me some luck being a black cat and all lol...
Well anyway on the brighter side of things i have been able to have a two week rest from work, wasn't exactly the holiday i was hoping for but hey i cant be picky..
I will be sure to watch where i put my hands from now on.

Sam xx
