So there's a friend of my moms that is really smart (23 yrs old... in a year or so he'll be a full blown doctor) and him and some other doctors have been saying that Kc has been taking too many pills. (which everyone knew that). but they also said that if she keeps taking all of these medications and narcotics (for her chest pain and episodes) her heart is going to shut down. Which is a really scary thought. They said that at this rate she's taking narcotics (everyday she needs a morphine... and Oxycontin every 12 hours) she wont be able to live to see her 20th birthday... I don't want that! Her birthday is only in February, a few months away... could this really happen so soon? It can't. I think. I hope. I don't know. This is too much for me to take in at one time.

She has been at my moms house for the last 2 weeks or so and she has been having chest pain every night almost. I hate my little sister(only 10 yrs old) being there having to watch Kc in pain like that. My mom has been so stressed too seeing her in so much pain. Same with my Uncle Rick. With all of them stressed like that there, its making me more stressed here. and the fact i can't do anything to help Kc almost 6 hours away. I feel useless.

Sincerely,
CJ

CJ, this friend of your moms is not KC's treating physician so I doubt he has access to Kc's medical records. If what this man is telling you/your mom/Kc worries you, you need to bring it up to the treating physician. If you are not comfortable with the course of care Kc's current doctor has prescribed, then you have every right to get a second opinion. But I'm not sure I'd be very comfortable taking medical advice from someone who may not have all the facts. Best of luck.

Hi CJ,

About these Doctors who have been saying that KC "has been taking too many pills". Are they her Primary Care Physician, her Rheumatologist, or other specialist that she has been treated by? Did these doctors with this advice actually prescribe KC the meds? Have they seen her records and/or recommended a course of treatment based upon a proper diagnosis that they either made themelves, or contributed to as a specialist?

If the answer to these questions is NO, then these people have no business giving out any specific advice as to what meds your sister should, or should not be taking.

CJ, Manderson and Rob are right on. Plus, this guy is "almost" a doctor? That's the most dangerous stage - think they know it all, but they have no experience. If the other "doctors" are his classmates, that just makes things worse. Personally, I think it was unkind and irresponsible (at the least) for him to say that to your mom. My daughter was on large doses of narcotics for 3 years and just weaned herself off. She had no side effects with her heart and just had a big cardiac workup (for another reason) that proved her heart is perfectly healthy. I can't even think of a reason why they would say KC's heart would shut down.

I'm going to repeat myself and suggest that you get some counseling to help with this stress. Someone needs to stand up for you in all of this, and a therapist (minister, priest, school counselor) can help you cope, but maybe also be a voice for you with your mom and Uncle Rick. You are just as important as KC and your little sister and I am really worried about YOU right now.

The others doctors that have commented on Kc taking too many pills have not been the ones that prescribed them to her. I don't know what to believe anymore. Lupus has so many complications! I dislike Lupus. -_-

First..I agree with what everyone has said about these guys not being her primary care doctors, not having access to her complete history, and not being doctors yet!
If her treating doctors have made comments about her meds, then perhaps there should be an appointment, with her primary, to go over her medical history, go over all of her meds, discontinue those that she may not need, change those that need to be changed, or modify those that are still needed. In any case..it must be done with her treating doctors, not with friends who are not doctors yet.
I wish you, KC, and your family the very best!

Peace and Blessings
