Hi All, I just started to date a girl and found out she has SLE which I has no idea about at all. We like each other very much. Googled SLE and realised it's a chromic and serious illness which ahs no cure. I'm concerned and worried, hoping to know soem facts here in this forum.

She is 35 yrs old now, had SLE diagnosed 11yrs ago. She's been in remission for all these years and is super fit, playing badminton competitively couple of times a week, energetic and strong. She is on low dose of predisone everyday.

My concern and worry is can SLE be in remission permanently? what's the side-effects of steroids even on low dose every day forever?

hi sky, and welcome.

lupus is a problem with the auto immune system.
so everybody can have slightly different circumstances.

may i suggest, talk to a rhuematologist. they are the type of doctor who specialises in sle.
they would be able to help with your questions, we can only talk from our experiences.

basically it is possible for lupus to be treated very effectivelly with proper medication.
but as i said everybody can be different.
and 1 person can change...........

i am currently in a state where my lupus is being controlled so well, i have just been able to 1/2 my medication.

i hope i have helped put your mind at ease.

Good morning and welcome to WHL.

Remission is rare but it does happen as you are seeing. However, as Steve said eariler, even when not in remission often time Lupus can be controlled through meds so that people can go on to have very normal and productive lives. I have to agree, see if you can go with her to a Rhuemy appointment and see if you can get information about her particular situation since we are all so different.

Welcome to WHL and please let us know if you have any other questions!
