For the medication plaquinel to get out of your system? I know it takes about 3-6 months to start working but how long does it take to stop working? Reason I ask is that it is day 2 of me being out of my meds and the pharmacy has not heard back from my doctor yet.... I'm going to have to call them again today... I've been trying to get ahold of them since I first realized I missed my appointment last thrusday and I finally did on Monday and I still haven't gotten a call.... God I hope this doesn't send me into a major flare. I'm going to be pissed if it gets out of my system and I have to start the next three months over because my doctor is an idiot...Though I guess then we'll know the meds are working but it doesnt sound like much fun. Anyways just thought I would ask and hopefully I get ahold of somebody soon.

it seems to stop working a lot sooner than it starts working. For me I have always started seeing effects of not taking plaquenil about 11 days after I stop taking it. After three weeks I can go into a serious flare if its in the cards. I got into trouble from the guys on here for stopping my meds... so now I know to be a good girl and take all my meds as I should : )

You should be fine for a few days off the meds, but I would try to get those meds asap! If I stop taking it for a couple of days and start back up I can feel the effects a little down the track, but its not as bad as staying off.

Steve is absolutely right. I DO have first hand experience. I was an IDIOT and I thought I would SHOW the doctors and take myself off of plaquenil so they could see just how sick I really was (OK, it sounded a lot smarter in my head while fighting or a diagnosis). Plaquenil took about 5 months to really work on me but in less than 2 weeks I was in a major flare. Since that time I have yet to go back to a non flaring stage. Steroid shots every couple of weeks, high doses of steroids daily, new meds... we can't seem to find the combination to get me out of it.

Do whatever you have to do to get the plaquenil. You might could talk to your pharmacy about giving you a few days worth while you (and they) try to get in touch with the doctor. You sound like you have a bit of time but, like giggles said, don't let it go too long!

I was on plaquenil abit back and it took 5wks to work with my skin but i had to come off it but i'm back on it now and i actually thought i'd be ok just stopping the tablet i had the shakes the next day, so i'd sort it out as soon as you can to get your medication.

In the end to come off it properly and only taking 200mg daily i chipped at the tablet daily and after 8 days i was ok.

Get onto them and don't mess about if you need your meds and all the best. xxx

Your meds might be part of the March 2011 recall that affected some steriods including Medrol. If you go to the thread Ritzbit started about her Medrol being out you can see the link I posted with the info. I can tell you from experience that abruptly stopping steriods is a big no-no and can make you very sick and can set your body into a flair. If your pharmacy is out of it I would have them call around to other pharmacies to find it. If they are a chain, they should be able to check within their own network. If they can't find it that way you might have to call around and temporarily change the perscription or call around to your doctors and see if they have any samples on hand or to see if the doc that perscriped the plaq can change the script to another med temporarily.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I actually got my pills today after I called them about it. The pharmacy was out of the pills so they to be ordered in addition to having to call my doctor about getting it refilled. I've only missed two pills so I should be good to go from here! I wouldn't stop taking my meds unless my doctor told me to it just took them forever to get him to get back to them! I'm all set though and have them!!

Hi Liz,

Like mari said it can take 5-6mths for them fully in your system but refering skin problems than can work abit earlier and don't get mashing your head in mate, some work quicker than other's why do you think it's called a waiting game.lol

I noticed it only took weeks of taking Plaquenil for my skin rashes to improve. Probably about 4 - 6 months for the rest of my body to feel better.

My Plaquenil dose increased about 6 weeks ago along with starting Prednisolone 5 weeks ago because I was getting sicker from some complications after a I had a major operation in January. I am yet to start to feel better. But I must admit though, I think the increase in medication has stopped the fast progression. I suppose if I didn't have the increase in medication, I would sure to be sicker.

I know it is hard waiting for the medication to start working, but hang in there, it will come. If you are concerned, phone your rheumatologist or primary doctor to reassure you.

Well Linda,

I won't see much difference with it yet as i started it again last thursday and with this outbreak on my face to clear as well then hopefully i should see some improvement slowly with my skin and i took your advice taking it at night.

I've not felt no side affects as yet, just abit more breathless today but that could be the flu, i hope when it's gone i see a better improvement but cheers for alerting me about night time. xxx

Terri,
I'm glad to see that you are giving the Plaquenil another try, with less side effects this time. It seems to work so well for so many of us.
Hugs,
Marla

Terri as soon as your nose and lip sores heal you will feel so much better. It is horrible when you are in so much pain all the time, that is all you seem to focus on. AND it is especially bad for you when your sores are on your face ..... gosh you look a mess, along with the operation recovery, you must be feeling a mess. Don't you just wish you could take some strong sleeping tablets to let you sleep until all the sores and pain has gone away. Terri, keep strong, but also, let yourself be upset and angry every now and then. The worse you can do is to make your sores feel worse, then you have another good reason to cry. Let me know how you feel by next weekend. BETTER, I really really really really hope!!!!!!!

I am so glad that you got your Prednisone. Just for future reference, however, you should know that it can be dangerous to stop Prednisone abruptly and you doctors should have known this. Now, I know that you did not stop by choice, but their failure to make sure you had the drug caused you to stop abruptly.
When prednisone is taken for more than a few weeks, the body becomes accustomed to it and begins to make less of its natural steroids. If the drug is stopped too quickly, the body does not have time to adjust, and dangerous side effects can occur, up to including damage to your heart.
So please make sure that you always have your prescription filled and that you do not miss a dose.
I wish you the very best.

Peace and Blessings
Namaste

Still got the sores on my mouth they've drued up using zovirax but to try and eat is murder, the sides of my mouth keep splitting and bleeding and it's taking hell of a while for my nose to heal especially.
Refering my op i keep getting the sharp pains but ste's really got me resting up and with my drugs the plaquenil and painkillers i feel dazed some days.
Really i should knock me out with a few family instead of one, i would sleep then..i used to be on sleeping pills but they fetched me off them quite a few years back.

You keep well and strong yourself Linda as your not to good yourself lately. Hugszzzzzzz Terry xxxxx
